LX vs RX, how to convince the wife...

She should get the RX300 otherwise you may start "hanging out" in this forum, trying to figure out how to steal her LX470 from her...

I've driven the RX300 and the RX330. They were loaner cars provided by Lexus when I had warranty work done. I had the opportunity to drive one in particular for about a week. Although I didn't like them before I drove one, I don't think they're all that bad.

Nice features, very comfortable to drive -- lots of leg and head room -- much more than in my LX 450...seriously.

It's really not that bad.

I'd prefer the LX 470, personally, but the RX 300 isn't all that bad as an option.

Did I just kill your "all the guys on the MUD board say 300 sucks" argument? ;p

That is the same way I got to drive a RX300 and it was great. I was actually thinking of one for the g/f
The only thing I dont like is the egg-shape. I like the Murano too.

The RX isn't bad if you want to drive an AWD Camry. My mom (RX300) and father-in-law (RX330) have'em - no problems. But you're really comparing apples and oranges. Other than being SUVs (I guess the RX qualifies as an SUV) and made by Toyota they really have nothing else in common.

Josh83 and ff347 are spot on. I find that even our GX is a little cramped at times (we are in the same family situation as you). Get a LC instead of LX, and save a grand, or spend those extra $$$ buying newer/lower mileage.

Just my $.02 - opinions may vary.

My wife is not the type to drive test cars, but I had been looking at new LC 100s and she was not particularly impressed... until one day when I had an overnight trial and asked her to drive it back to the dealer the next day because I had to go to work. Later, when I asked her what she thought about it she told me I should have never let her drive it back... she loved it. Although that was a new one, we bought a year old 01 LC after that. The comfort, smoothness, visibiility, confidence, and security are exceptional. She loved the vehicle and worrried and nagged when I took it on light off roading.

I got an 03 4runner V8 4WD for running on mountain roads (ozark, oauchita), however I am 6'2" and the front seat did not give adequate thigh support, so I got rid of it.

After putting 64K on the LC I traded it in on an 04 Sienna LTD AWD in the interest of gas mileage and space for travels. After having an LC, the Sienna was a huge disappointment in comparison. My wife is short and did not like the poor visibility in the Sienna - and did not like it that other drivers did not seem to see the Sienna - they would almost run her off the road. She likes a vehicle that people see and do not mess with it.

I spent months looking for another used 100 LC/LX and saw many that were abused - looking for a good value on one in excellent shape. Ended up with a certified 01 LX that was immaculate - at first my wife thought the LX was fluff (vs LC)... but once she drove it around... she loves it.

I mention the Sienna because its AWD is similar to the Highlander/RX. If you like real 4x4, it will disappoint - though it did great in light snow and ice. The 4Runner was really a nice full time 4wd set up and was a pleasure to dirve - but not on a trip that lasted more than a couple hours because of the seat. I have driven the RX as a loaner - it drives real well and is a cute auto. However, it is no comparison to the 100. The GX has the same front seat problem for tall people as the 4runner, and I hate the swing out rear door.

I love the traction control in the 100s starting in 00 - it works great, I think better than in my 4Runner. It is seamless to my wife, who loves the 4wd without complicated instructions.

Hold out for an outstanding 100 at a reasonable cost - there are a lot in marginal condition - I avoided them regardless of the "deal" offered. Best wishes in your search.

Oh boy. Somebody on this thread isn't going to like reading it. (Though that's what I've been saying all along.)

GREAT INFO LXPEARL! I'm really surprised about the Sienna comments though they do make sense. I just looked (never dorve) at a few and thought they made a great buying choice for most.

Enjoy your LX!

Thanks for the comments guys, even the positive ones about the RX. :D

I have a picture of the back of the LC loaded for our last trip (I took it because I was whining about all of the stuff we took) if I can find it, an LX is in your future!

Scott

Going to look at an LX tomorrow, I think I may have her convinced, but of course she has the right to change her mind :D

It's a 98 LX w/115k, timing belt, etc. and brakes a few months ago at Toyota dealer, and some other maintenance at Lexus, hopefully I can see some reciepts tomorrow, looks good, less than $19k, decent price here in the PNW, after looking at both LC and LX 100 series over the past few months.

Gee who would that be, Kunihiro Hoshi? The Toyota chief engineer responsible for the design of the latest production ATRAC system?

I guess you know everything Shotts.

OK guys, knock it off, this thread is supposed to be about ME. Me, Me, Me, Me, Me, Me, Me, Me!

OK we have bought a dark green and gray, 98 LX470 w/115k miles for $18500, it just had timing belt, water pump, brakes done this past summer, $3k of service/maintenance in last year, new Toyo Open Country ATs last spring, drives well, looks crappy inside and out, but will clean up well, except possibly a stain under the 2nd row seats, and two ball point pen marks on the seat (how do I get those out?), and a scuff on the PS of the rear bumper cover.

I will pick it up on Thursday, my wife has not seen it yet and I told her she can not see it until I pick it up and spend several hours detailing it , or else she will be pissed, because the LX is as dirty as the Element she drives now, for some reason she can't buy a dirty car but she can drive one just fine ;) Anyway, I am happy with the deal, it is tough to find any LX for under $22-24k around here since I've been looking (months at least). It is well maintained and I will make it pretty, so it's all good.

Firetruck41, congratulations on your (wife's) new LX. That beige interior is a big difficultt to keep clean. Get the largest rubber mats you can find, I don't recommend the Lexus ones. As for ink on leather. Try rubbing alcohol.

How long are you going to keep up this "my wife got a new LX470" story? Be honest, we won't tell the 80 forum this is the replacement for the 96:D

 She would never allow it!:D This will just distract her so I can spend some $$$ on my LX450:cool:

Dude, you've already got some AT tires on that bad boy:idea:

"Honey, I need to get these Slee Slider Steps so it's easier for you to get in and out."

a week later...

"Honey, I'm going to the market for a few hours."

a few hours later...

"Honey, there was a real large puddle at the mall and I got your SUV a bit muddy."

I picked it up yesterday, it has cleaned up pretty well, just need to work on getting scuffs off of the interior doorpanels and front seatbacks, looks like their kids kicked them alot

Heres same rainy day pics:

Sounds like a solid deal too.
Congrats!!!!!

Wow, you bought the G-money edition... gold emblems, chrome wheels, money-green paint...

Congratulations, you're gonna like driving the 100.
