Hi,
I just bought an LX with only one Key. I want to program one more key. Can I just buy a Blank from ebay or amazon, and get it laser cut and program it myself?

I am not too concern about the remote lock and unlock. as long as I have a spare keys, I can feel better :p .. at least if I loose my original fob and key, I still can open the door and start the car with a spare key.

anyone have experience?

this is a document I found online how to program it

3 Buttons Remote Key Fob 314.4MHz 4C Chip for 1998-2002 Lexus LX470 HYQ1512V | eBay

nevermind I just realize I need the FOB since the transponder chip is actually on the fob and not on the blade.. ..

The instructions look right. I bought a cut key from 1010keys on eBay. Local Lexus dealer provided me with the key code after I provided proof of ownership.

So, at the risk of not adding any value to this thread, we bought an '07 LX470 about 6 weeks ago and it came with one three-button fob more or less like the one in the ebay ad above and two plain old keys (no buttons and not Lexus blanks - just keys). All three of the keys work just fine. I was skeptical at first but I have been using the plain key and the wife keeps the key with buttons, etc., and I have not had any problems.

I assume the plain keys must still have a chip in them?

That doesn't make any sense unless the previous owner stashed the other transponder in the truck near the ignition module so a standard key could still work.

This has to be the case.

Can't a key have a chip but no remote functions ?

A valet key will have a RFID chip inside of it, without a remote. I ordered two replacement keys (no fob) from eBay seller BBBlocks. I emailed Lexus to get my key code and when I purchased the keys, the seller cut both of them to the key code for free. They worked perfectly. A lot Toyotas use the same FOB inside the key. You can get one from a FJ Cruiser, Camary, ect and put it inside the shell. I believe after a certain year, the RFID type inside the fob was changed. If I remember correctly, a 98-02 LC/LX uses a type 4C RFID which you can get on Amazon or eBay for like $2. I have a thread on here somewhere that shows how to replace them easily.

I ended up buying 3 RFIDs. I programmed an extra one as a master and have it taped to a sheet of paper with the key code on it. In case I lost both sets of keys, I would be able to easily make new ones.

I have a 2002 LC and I had the same issue. I purchased this key blank and transponder from amazon for $25. Called around to many locksmiths in my area, all with varying prices (as high as $150) to cut the key and program, although like you, I had the program instructions and thought I could do it if need be. Long story short I found a locksmith willing to cut the key and program it for free, so I tipped him $20.

I just ordered the item with three button blank from ebay. it says it has a 4C chip.

where do you get a blank regular key with RFID embedded? or you meant just a blank key, then you purchase a separate 4C RFID?

I wonder if step 1 to 6 is to program a key with only 4C RFID (no remote).

and step 7 beyond is to program the remote portion.

also what do you mean when lexus provide you with a code ? is it a special machine where you can enter the code and set the RFID with the provided code ?
does Lexus provide just a code , or they set the code as well ?? or you go to an independent key store that is capable of entering provided code into the chip?

soorry lots of questions :)

Hope you got the right one. There are both a long and short blade models.

You can buy a regular transponder key (no remote entry) on ebay or other places.

NO. What you have posted is the procedure to program the remote portion of a 3 button transponder key.

and step 7 beyond is to program the remote portion.

NO. No part of what you posted deals with programing a new key so that the ECU recognizes it. I recommend you slow down, read up on it and THEN proceed.

A key can be 'cut' from a 'code' that is assigned to each different 'cut shape'. In other words you don't need a physical key for one to be made IF you know the key code.

Is there instruction to program just the key and 4C transponder (no remote) ...

I got a chipped key with no buttons for my LX from Ebay. $6 including shipping plus $30 for the cut.
I used the TLC FAQ article about reprogram a new key to make it work, took me 5 mins.

Found it ! thanks all

That should work. Steps 1-6 are unnecessary, just make sure your windows are up and all door are closed, then start at step 7.

It might take several tries. It seems with some keys the 'timing' of the sequences makes a difference. Also, IF your new key fails to program, it is possible the ECU already has too many keys programmed to it, so you might have to 'delete' those from the system before programming a new one.

Lots of info on it. Use search. Let us know if you have any problems. IF you have your key cut locally (locksmith) they can probably do the programming for you for a nominal fee. The Lexus keys are not 'laser' cut, they are milled on a special machine that uses a laser to copy the profile of an original key.

To clarify the key with chip topic, there are at least 3 key types for the 100 series (and most 2000's Lexus):

1. Remote Key
2. Transponder Key w/o remote
3. Wallet Key

1 and 2 both have the transponder. The picture below shows a valet key that has the transponder to start the car, but no remote. You can have this style as a master or a valet (both start the car) or un-programmed which would unlock doors mechanically, but not start the car unless another transponder is within a few inches of ignition.

The lower remote with the blade broken off is a great advertisement for my titanium key shell replacement so I'm making a shameless plug to tack onto my post. Check out the Titanium reinforced keyshell I make if you experience a broken remote key shell. :)

The key arrived today
But they are 0.20 inches short
5mm short for us canadian
My lx is 98my i thought 98 has the shortest key no?

Will it work?. Also it comes with a transponder separately?? How ?? I thought the transponder will be embedded inside the plastic housing??

O well lets get the keycut and see if it worked.
