I have the night vision system on my 03 LX470. I've been trying to decide what to do about the IR Lights in the bumper when I finally upgrade to a steel one. Since I'm not in love with the system I considered removing everything (except the windshield) and selling it. That would also free up the space on my dash for a locker switch....

So, is this worth considering or should I just keep the system and figure out how to mount the lights on the new bumper?

I've thought about this, and wondered if something like this would keep it functional with minimal effort:

Infrared Light Series | Rigid Industries LED Lighting, Leader in...
Infrared LED LED Light Bar - 54W | Specialty High Power LED Spot Lights | LED Grow Lights and Aquarium Lighting | Super Bright LEDs

I wouldn't say that I've found the system to be extremely useful, but there have been a couple of times that is has been somewhat useful. If I'm stuck with the wart on the dash, the camera on the windshield and the spot on the windshield, I'd feel kinda silly intentionally breaking the system.

Thanks for the feedback. I also just read someone else who has replaced their bumper and the system seems to work fine without the lights, so I may just leave it when I do the bumper replacement.

Dang it - double replied and don't know how to fix it. Anyway, I wrestled with the same thing a couple years ago. I found some military surplus IR's that mounted up nicely. EBay if I remember right, maybe around $100.

I cant imagine you could get too much money for it as a system. Not many people wanted it new (thus the very limited run) and i cant imagine too many people on here trying to retro fit it. That being said, when i was looking i test drove one and it seemed pretty cool but when i moved on to a different lx i havent given it any thought at all. I think most people here would do a headlight upgrade first. SO i would vote aftermarket IR lights on your new bumper, that would definitely raise it up the cool looking but not often used spectrum even further.

It will still work without the parts in the bumper. Once i locked and used the factory 80 switch, i disconnected the nightvision switch and tucked the wires behind the dash.

Maybe dumb question but does it work any differently, does it still have the night vision effect or does it work more like a regular camera.

Completely off subject, but love your Avatar

The IR emitters on our trucks are actually just standard bulbs with an IR filter in the projector housing. The camera is actually indifferent about whether the light is full spectrum, or IR only. (I suspect the IR filters are in place to not blind oncoming traffic, as the projectors are a very wide beam).

With that being said, if you push the same amount of light down the road post-modification (IR, or full spectrum) as you do with the stock setup then the function of the night vision shouldn't be degraded at all.
