my lx let me down the other day a bimmer cut me off and when i hit the brakes i spun out in the rain and hit the guard rail i wierd to say but it all happened in slow motion i seen the guy coming over and my first reaction was to put my arm out to hold my cooler which was sitting in the passenger seat i hit the brakes and then i started to go sideways i slammed harder on the brakes but just spun around and slid into the guard rail and bamm the jerk did not even stop luckily a bus behind me seen what happened and slowed down and did not hit me he did stop to make sure i was ok anyway i just thought the 4wd or the brakes would have handled better??? or actually did they work and save my life looking back now i guess i should have been going slower. body shop took away the truck today

Good thing you are ok.

Any crash that everyone walks away from is crappy, but acceptable. The 4 wheel drive helps prevent the loss of control, but once it is out of control, it is hard to get back. Traction Control or not. 6000 lbs is a lot to stop once it is no longer going the direction you want it.

Did the airbag go off?

What year LX? What condition are your tires and how much rain? Did it just start raining? or was it pouring down. Roads are super slick when it just starts raining.

Sorry that happened.

odd that it spun and locked up, with ABS etc. does it have VSC? did you turn while braking?

It's good to hear that you are okay. I hate to say it, but this appears to be driver error. You hit the brakes, the rear started to walk around on you due to weight transfer and a lack of traction and you failed to correct for it. Correcting for it would have required that you get off the brakes some to get some weight back on the rear tires and get the truck straightened out and then reintroduced threshold braking.

IMHO, that is what ABS is for. So someone with little experience at the edge of the performance envelope doesn't cause more harm than good.

Just my $.02

I'm not sure I would say "it" let you down. These are trucks and they handle like trucks. You slam on brakes and cut the wheel, that back end wants to come around and the traction control can only do so much. The 4-wheel drive is useful when going....not stopping. Be pissed, but be glad you walked away. It could have been a lot worse if the bus hadn't see you.

I would say that for a collision with a fixed object that you and your vehicle did quite well! On most wreck scenes involving wet surfaces you (the vehicle) actually gain speed when you lose control, (atleast that is how the highway patrol usually figures it). I have been to 15yrs worth of wrecks and that picture, depending on your impact speed, looks really good. The MOST important thing is your still with us!

Good to hear that you're okay. When I lived in LA, I got cutoff countless times, virtually everytime by bimmer drivers who drive like they think they have something to prove. After that happened three times in one week (one time almost getting side-swiped at 70mph...had to jerk the wheel over to avoid getting hit, causing the vehicle to lurch), I said enough is enough. I bought an ARB winchbar. Now, I don't even flinch if someone tries to cut me off...no braking, no course change...I just ignore them. I figure if I can't stop, I'll plow into his rear/rear quarter rather than risk me flipping over or side-swiping an innocent driver! Wife loves it, too...says she feels much safer driving.

I like it :D

When I drive my civic on the race track. In the rain ABS works great during straight line braking. But once you get the car sideways it tends to lock up and it will remain locked up until you ease the pressure on the pedal.

ABS just prevents wheel lock-up. Weight transfer (slamming on the brakes = rear end becoming light) while turning causes fun things to happen.

I bet this wasn't a 2000 or later model with the VSC and Traction control.

Mine didn't....

My truck after impact...that thing hanging down in the first pick is HER headlight

Is that the factory plastic bumper? Just imagine if you had the kaymar or slee.

ABS helps though is not enough in a situation like this. I'm very curious the year LX. From my experience, the ABS and VSC combo might have saved him or lessened the trouble. Run33....what year buddy? Glad you're OK (thanks to that fine vehicle)!

I thought the VSC was made for situations like this. Pre-vsc model perhaps. ABS doesn't work well sliding sideways! Brakes probably didn't lock but the tire was sliding.

Good point about ABS and being sideways. Just because the tires are rotating, doesn't mean it they any meaningful traction.

33, I didn't say it before, glad to hear you're OK.

r3run33,

I forgot the most important thing....glad you are ok!

Jim,

Yep...just the stock plastic bumpper!

She was driving a '93 S-10...the old body style which was all metal...I am pretty sure that it ended up being totaled due to age and milage.

As it stands, she could not drive the vehicle home because the radiator was smashed into the cooling fan and leaking. Also, the sheet metal was crunched into the front passenger tire.

I can't imagine what a Kaymar or Slee rear bumper would have done to that truck...
