Looks like a fun project, I'm in the process of buying a can-back so my runner can be topless all year. I'll stop by some time next semester and check out the build and we can take our topless toys for a cruise.

Brian

Brian,

Sounds good. I'll see ya around next semester.

Do you need some rear quarter panels or are going a different route?

Without a welder it might be kinda hard to mount new ones.

Dan, Hows it going. Nah I don't need the rear quarters. I would hate to waste a good set on this truck.

I haven't done much since my last update. I actually got the passenger side primered and I did get rid of ALL the foam that was causing the rust, on both sides.

I also trimmed the rear quarters to get rid of the rust.

I have removed all the seats, ripped the carpet out, fixed the saggy headliner that was left in the front.

I have also removed 1 of the cross braces that holds the roof from the rear part I removed and am going to use it to support the rear of the front cab to keep it from flapping in the wind.

I think next week I will probably get the fiberglass to do all the work.

Anyone have a set of 4 doors that would let go really cheap? I am thinking it would be easier to do that then to try and fix the rust.

VERY NICE ... I guess I'm the only one choppin to the wind sheild :grinpimp:

chop those rockers and keep the pics commin

Eventually I will get to the windshield. I just figured I would stop were I knew I could handle. And I wasn't sure if i was ready for the full chop.

I might just PM orangefj45. I have a guy in KS with a set but he wanted me to make him an offer...i don't like making an offer.

THe rockers will definatly be going. The pass side rocker is gone and the drivers side is soon to follow

so another update.

In the past few weeks I had decided to make my bed rail caps out of PVC pipe that was close to 2.5 inch outside diameter since the gap in my bed rail is 2.5" in diameter. Well I went to Lowes and for $6 I could buy what I needed but.....I have no way of splitting it down the middle to form the cap.....so I asked if they could run it through their table saw that I KNOW they have somewhere and they said NO......I went to Meeks thinking they might could do it......NOPE.

So I went home and drank a nice cold Jones Strawberry Lime pure cane soda and comptemplated what I was to do. I could either go ahead and buy the PVC and take it home this weekend and let my dad split it for me or I could find another way to make the cap.....and then my REDNECK SIDE overtook me and I knew what I was to do.

I was going to use DUCT-TAPE AND SODA CANS.....yes you read it right Duct Tape and soda cans..........

I took about 6-8 empty soda cans and taped them end to end. They end up being the perfect length. Then I wrapped the cans in Cling Wrap.....>From here it was a learning experience......I cut the fiberglass sheets into the correct size strips and mixed my first batch of resin/hardener. It actually turned out correct and made the perfect amount....lucky me.

I made the strips wide enough to cover the top half of the "pipe" that I had made. And I went with three layers......unbeknownst at the time that I would need a bit of flexibility and much more than 3 layers wouldn't give me any flex.

After it had dried I carefully popped it off of my mold and set it on the bed rail of the truck and it didn't look terrible........not good either........mean time my paint brush I used to spread the resin/hardener has dried into a solid piece of resin......i was chipping concrete with it trying to loosen it up enough to work the dried resin out of it.

So I decided this would work. Next I took another two strips of fiberglass mat, decidedly wider this time, and fiberglassed the rail to the truck......this is where I quit because by the time it dried, I had to go to work......

I will have pictures of my process for everyone hopefully by tommorrow....if not then I will have them by thursday although I'm sure everyone will be looking at Nats "artistic" pictures on thursday.

Your truck sounds like a van in my area, they chopped the top off and stuck that black perforated drainage hose over the cut. You do need a shrunken head hangin from the rear view to be total twins though.

here are some pictures that i promised.....they aren't that good as they were taken by my phone.

The first one is the "can/duct tape" contraption

Are you going to glass in the wheelwell too?

yeah i am going to glass the wheel wells in, in some fashion. It won't be the greatest cruiser on the site but it will get the job done.

What is the latest? The bad weather season is quickly approaching.

Post up all you want, let the nay says keep talking smack to you. Just ignore them

You are making something happen with one of your rigs on a shoe string budget.

Have you taken the Mastif for a ride in it yet?

hey, noticed the bump, thought i would chime in.

quote: I have a set of 15x8 wheels located and secured that will work until I can afford the wheel/tire combo so that I can run the 37" military tires that I can get down the street. What can I run on 15x8s?

you should be able to run up to 12.5" wide tires on an 8" rim. I'm sure someone else on mud might know for sure...

I have been using fiberglass resins to fix a surfboard. Crazy stuff. I bet once you sand down those caps they will be just fine. Good enough for government work, right!?

hope all is well with your build.

I got to go wheeling for the first time with my 60 the other day, short trip but awesome. savage felt unstoppable.
