lug nuts for stock wheels

Hi, I have a 96 LC and had a question regarding lug nuts. My LC has what I think are the stock wheels, and on those wheels I have my winter tires mounted. Over the winter I purchased what I thought were another set of stock 16 inch aluminum wheels and had them refinished. Both sets wheels have "Toyota" stamped on them in one of the front slots so I'm assuming they are OEM wheels and not knock offs.

Anyway, I took the newly refinished rims to my local tire store to have them mounted with summer tires. They called me to ask if I had a different set of lug nuts for the refinished wheels as the lug nuts for the wheels with winter tires will not fit. They said the lug nuts I had were flat against the wheels and I need a set for the new wheels that fit into a small indentation in the wheels.

So, are there two different types of 16" aluminum wheels? And, if so, are there two different types of lug nuts?

Thanks, PPC. I did search on that but I almost am more confused now than before reading those threads. Even with the pictures above, I couldn't tell the difference between the two wheels just by looking at them. Maybe the acorn style wheel isn't the correct lug nut for the winter tires either? I am thinking that my winter wheels are using the "acorn" style lug nut and my summer wheels are needing the other kind. If that is correct, do I just go to the dealer and order the non-acorn style lug nut?

You need 12x1.5 conical 60 degree lug nuts. Available at pretty much any parts store, but usually cheaper online.

Yes, but you will need 24 of them instead of 20.

Im also looking at the website Toyotapartsdeal.com. They are listing two different part numbers for the lug nut.

90942-01077 is for 95-98 LC's

90942-01081 is for 92-95 LC's

90942-01082 does not specify a year that these will fit.

You're not looking close enough. There were 2 types of OEM wheels depending on year. 95-97 use the flat washer type lug nuts. 91-94 use conical style lug nuts.
If you look at the lug nut seat area on the wheel, you'll notice the difference. One is flat, the other is a conical seat.

I have a 96 with a build date of 08/95. My truck has the acorn (tapered) lug nut wheels. Most 96's have the shank style (like what your winter wheels lug nut pic shows)

They actually switched over some time in 95.

I must have bought wheels from a 91-94 not knowing there was a difference. I asked the Toyota dealer to bring in both kinds so I can verify. Is there any advantage buying toyota lugs versus aftermarket?

Yes. The Toyota lug nuts are guaranteed to be straight and concentric. The other Chinese aftermarket parts are not. I've seen them pretty far off before. For the shank/barrel-nut style, the Toyota parts are specially treated to prevent breaking. I can't say the same about the aftermarket parts. They are more expensive, but over-all, its cheap insurance against a failure of an important part.

Your local tire shop SHOULD have the right lug nuts for either wheel. Neither style is exclusive to Toyota Land Cruisers. My son did 4+ years at a Discount Tire. Your shop should have buckets of used ones that will fit

I believe the actual Toyota lug nuts MAY be manufactured to a bit better tolerances. I changed to the acorn lug nuts from O'Reillys because all my old Toyota ones had peeled completely. For the first time in my life, I have actually lost lug nuts as well as have had lug nuts work loose after torquing. I have NEVER had that previously.
