Hi All,

Have a 1991 HDJ81 with FF and LSD. I believe it's on it's way out as we found traces of metal in rear diff oil. Hopefully not the ring/pinion. Wondering what my options are for rebuild kits if any or whole unit replacement, preferably from a Canadian source for shipping/customs reasons.

Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by traces? Chunks of metal are something to worry about. Metal filings are not much of a concern.

I know of some Aussies that like to clean up their LSD (clean up the clutch pack) by draining off 1/2L of gear oil and adding an engine oil cleaner like Seafoam (NAPA) in the same amount. They then drive it that way for a 100 kms or so (but no towing or heavy loads). They drain that away and then refill with some cheap gear oil. Again, they drive it for up to 50 kms and drain again. Then they refill with good LSD gear oil. If you don't have LSD gear oil, then buy a good gear oil of the weight required and buy a tube of the LSD friction modifier additive. NAPA or any other decent automotive parts store will have it. Make sure you put the additive in first before you refill.

If you got chunks, you are going to need to pull it. The easiest is probably to swap in a complete used axle or third member. Maybe consider it as an opportune time to buy a locker. When you start paying a shop to rebuild, the price adds up very quickly.

Interesting process. So far just filings or shavings and I have some shudder from the rear diff. Hoping it's not the ring and pinion.

have you done your birfs and drive plates?

What are you using the truck for? Pull the LSD and go with a locker:meh:

Birfields done in front...back u
Is fine. Truck is dd with light trail use, camping etc. lockers are expensive and I don't really need it.

Don't mistake the clutch pack locking up for a shudder. You'll feel a shudder on wet roads when you accelerate on a sharp turn, especially accelerating from a stop. That is a healthy clutch pack. Personally, I would go with the clean out before spending big money on a locker. I'd much rather have a rear LSD for the driving I do - with an air locker for the front (for when you need it on the trail). They are much better on snow at highways speeds.

Agreed, that's what I'm doing, going to flush everything and drive it around for a few days and then if needed open up the diff and inspect. The "shudder" is minor and only between 0-20kph

X2 .. but let me explain my opinion on this .. I don't think ( personal educated opinion ) factory Toyota ( at least in our old Cruisers ) worth to be rebuild ( Toyota sells the dics pack as rebuild kit with some other minor parts ) .. if it's shot .. leave it as if or replace with a locker ..

IMOP LSD are waste of $$$ .. never works when you really need 'em ..

Keep in mind I'm probably doing a part time kit and I live in a image with snow 5 months of the year. That's why I'd like to keep the LSD.

How many klms has it done? That shudder doesnt sound good, whenever I have had that it was ring/pinion.

~180k

You could always replace it with a better LSD. Are Torsen type available for reasonable money?

Is the shuddering from radial play at the pinion?

Not sure how to determine that, I just drive the thing.
