lsd bj 74

Hi team, the LSD in my BJ74 only works when you give it a fair bit of stick and by then your pretty stuck anyway. is this common with BJ74s. it has no diff noises. I ask because the one in my BJ42 would hook up straight away. the Diff in the 74 has a bolt on back cover. any ideas? cheers Jim

Ron R is totally RIGHT, over time the the LS diff oil can break down and not work well for the clutch packs in the diff, so it would be a good idea to change it and put the additive in. I hope it works for you.

Not sure on oil type only just received vehicle . I will drain it and fill with lsd oil. and see what happens. cheers.
 
They are not the strongest of LSD at the best of times. I heard they only send about 14% bias to the non drive wheel.
If an LSD in a Landcruiser is original and hasn't been worked on,the LSD effect will probably be gone.
Although the LSD in my 73 series worked better at 270000klms than the 75 series at 200000klms.

If the wrong oil was in there it might take another flush to get rid of the remnants and restore the function completely.
But if wrong oil is used before you should see at least some improvement after the first change .
 
i would say pull the LSD, strip it down, sand balst the clutch discs and shim the pack. reinstall with the proper oil additive.

Does the Japanese import 70 series units typicaly come with just a rear LSD? My rear diff definitley has a LSD but the front always seemed to be open. I ask because I just rebuilt my front knuckles and did not put an oil addidtive in.

I just use Castrol LS90 LSD oil. It meets or exceeds Toyota's standard

No, like Rosco, put in special LSD oil. No modifiers.
That's the only way to have it function reliable.

i have yet to see a LSD in the front come factory in ANY land cruiser...

Fronts are always open(unless they are lockable) but I haven't seen a JDM vehicle yet with a LSD.
Im not saying they dont exist but if they do,they are rare;)
They usually have K082 open diff or KO84 lockable diffs from what I have seen.

We now carry OEM style replacement units. I would say that if yours is not hooking up well youve got some wear. Yes LSD requires a friction modifier, but if you had none or it was broken down you would be experiencing the opposite. You would experience chatter, groaning on corners, and possibly binding.

Are you sure about what you are saying?:frown:
To my knowledge 'normal' diff-oil is too 'greasy' and the LSD won't get the friction it needs to operate.
When the oil is very old and the viscosity is low you will get the symptoms you discribe (don't ask how I know:crybaby:)
 
shoot in 2 tubes of LSD oil and see the results...

i tried it and it works well ... in a bush pig...

My ID plate lists axles as KO85 which is a 4 pinion limited slip acording to this chart http://toyota.off-road.com/toyota/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=274535

The rear diff definitley is hooking up both wheels but the front behaves like an open diff, I just though they would list the axles seperatley on the ID plate if they were not the same.

Oh well I guess it the LSD must have been an option in Japan(in oz its standard after 84)


I just though they would list the axles seperatley on the ID plate if they were not the same.
You would think so but they don't,not for any of the cruisers.
