So last night my keys fell off the harness connected to my back pack which contained my only Master Key. The only key I have left is the "valet key or spare key" (see photo). I would like to get another master key without breaking my wallet. I saw this video Toyota Landcruiser 100 series 1998-2002 key fob programming. Is it as simple as buying a replacement programmable and just following the directions once the key is cut? If yes, what kind do are the most recommended.

Thanks in advance for your help comments, recommendations, and or snark.

After going through this process, in order to get a working master key for our 99 LX:

I can say, I don't think it's quite that simple.

do tell and care to elaborate?

My understanding is that in order to add a master key, without a master key, the ECU has to be erased or "virginized".

For the early models this requires rewriting an EEPROM on the ECU (or replacing the ECU)

For the later models, the ECU can be "reset" through TechStream

I believe @Mauser is the resident expert on IH8MUD, maybe he can help you determine if your 2002 falls into the EEPROM or TechStream solution.

There's lots of info in the post I referenced above, if you follow the links.

I'd check and see how that key is actually programmed. "Master key" is simply that, how it was programmed into the ECU.

Insert the key you have into the ignition – DO NOT TURN ON. There are 3 possible things that may occur:
  • (a) Security light continues to blink = unrecognized key.
  • (b) Security light goes off IMMEDIATELY = MASTER key
  • (c) Security light remains illuminated for 1-3 seconds before going out = VALET key
Sub out Locksmith Charlie for our resident expert Mauser for help with flashing.

Yet another reason that you should ALWAYS have a spare master key. Buddies looked at me funny when I programmed my two FOB style keys as master and my other two non-fob as masters as well. Have left my keys on the side of a mountain when I pulled them from my hip-pack to get at snacks while riding and wife has lost keys on occasion.

It honestly isn't hard to rectify this issue any longer. Gone are the days when this was a real problem. A few shekels and postage to/from Mauser and the problem is resolved. You can lose every key to your car and Mauser can have you back in business in a few days. I will keep extra master keys around, but I don't fear this situation like I used to.

2002 should be resettable onboard. The only way to find out is to hook up Techstream and check. I have found it is cheaper to buy a copy of Techstream and do it yourself than it is to pay someone. If you can get access to Techstream I can help you with a passcode.

Just lost my ONLY key. Never been able to even get a blank cut locally (tiny island and no dealers). JDM 99 100. This thread gives me hope.

Please let me know what works for you. We're struggling to get another Master. I'm a newb to all of this and the Locksmiths have been trying for several months to get one programmed. This even after I've even replaced the locks.

Going to give a dealer a try but reluctant as they've done more harm than good on our other Toyota vehicle.

My cruiser didnt come with a master key. My dealership was able to program a new master key for me and they only charged the regular key programming fee which I think was like 50 bucks? I had to show my registration or something to show that the car was in my name.

Ended up finding a random guy who works at local airport and does keys as a side hussle!

He did the cut using a standard generic 3rd party key, and managed to get the immobiliser programming fairly easily too - although he took a lot more goes at getting the remote locking working. He pulled the driver's door lock, used that to make the physical, then a laptop to somehow program it after using the VIN I believe (or may have plugged into the diagnostic port - honestly can't remember exact method).

Cost me about $160 all in including one additional physical key (no programming) spare).

Sorry I can't help more, but here's picture of the fob / key he made if helps - pretty sure I've seen these at parts stores. Mine's a JDM model so not certain same as USDM.

Thanks for the followup. Since posting, I've also ordered a blank and am waiting for it to arrive. Also got TechStream and ordered a connector for the laptop. If that doesn't work will take to a dealer.

Where was this at?
