Is it possible to pull out the ignition tumbler, unlock the steering and start the car without the key?

I'm in a situation now where we lost the 1 key we had for the LX, ordered a replacement at Superstition Springs Lexus and need to pick it up.

We have 2 little girls, so we can't just take the Miata, and there are a few more things we need to do down near Phoenix today, so I wanted to know if its possible to make the Lexus usable so we can all go.

This may sound strange, but we don't have a babysitter or anyone to trade cars with, and the other vehicle I have is a 2 seater Miata.

Seems like it might be easier to split up the family.

Ignition cylinder removal

If I am not mistaken, the tumbler will not come out (using the button on the bottom ot the column) unless the ignition is in the ACC position. IE: you will need the key if you wish to keep the tumbler usuable.

How old are the girls? If small enough, seatbelt them both into the passenger seat of the Miata. This is an emergency situation suggestion only! I used to do that with my kids. Before flames start, it was only the 1 mile from day care to my house in my residential neighborhood and only did it when the spousal unit could not pick them up. They got too big, sold the Miata, bought the Landcruiser!

I won't flame you, though it's tempting, but where would you suggest he puts his wife?

Her boobs are way too big for her to fit in the Miatas trunk...already thought about it....

She's smarter than me tho......I started unscrewing bolts, and she said "Why not just call Enterprise and rent a car?"

Cody, had the impression it was just you and the two 'little girls' stuck and not all four of you. In the best Rosanadana voice - Never Mind, unless the Miata has the rear trunk luggage rack, then I'd suggest some bungee cords for the spousal unit. hehehe :D

options?

1 - taxi
2 - call Enterprise rental
3 - ask Lexus to deliver the keys to you or have someone there give you a ride -- they might just do it.

any one of the options listed above will be easier and more cost effective than messing around with your ignition. you're basically asking if anyone knows how to easily hotwire your rig -- you might have better luck getting a quick answer on the IBOOSTCARS.com site ;p

I only received a single key for my LX as well, and have been deathly afraid of losing it.

I'm looking at getting a matched set of locks (ingition, front doors, and rear hatch) for the land cruiser, and swapping them out. More expensive than getting a couple of keys cut, but in the long run much cheaper keys that can be cut anywhere (rather than laser cut blanks.....)

How much are they charging you for a new key?

Pick, and tension wrench? :D

With a Land Cruiser yes. A LX 450 with the internal laser cut keys? Much more difficult. ;p

Got a hill then? Bomb start it .. :)

I lost my keys on a golf course once. They (Toyota) were nice enough to send a guy out. The super cool thing was, I bought the thing in Arizona, and this was in New York. The local Toyota had no problem making keys and bringing them out... like... pronto too. It was impressive.

I just slip a set of keys under the bumper of a local city bus .. in a magnetic case. $1.25 and I'm all set .. sorta :D The hardest part was finding a car wash, AND a Starbucks on this 'route' ..

Got it figured out finally...

Needed to rent a car for the day, Enterprise came and picked us up. Signed the contract paperwork and made out way down to Phoenix.

The nice thing is, now we have 2 keys. The not so nice thing is, I paid like $80 at Scottsdale Lexus for 1 key, and $45 at Superstition Springs Lexus for 1 key.

Both were ordered yesterday and came next day.

The weird part was that S.S Lexus needed to see the registration and photo ID before they would release the key.

Scottsdale Lexus didnt ask for ID, or proof of ownership...

My wife went to the parts desk, said she was there to pick up a key for her 97 LX450. They just gave her the key, since we paid with a credit card over the phone yesterday.

OZCAL,

Liking that solution!

My dad has had problems getting keys for his LX. No Lexus dealer in Wyoming. They won't mail order them. When he visited me in Idaho we went to the dealer and they wanted Registration, DL, etc... and then they said 3-4 days and they would not mail it to him. It had to be picked up. He wasn't here that long so they didn't get an extra key. Sounds like you could easily call in a VIN and get a key in AZ. Sort of scary if you ask me.
