Driving back from Bolton through Flora after hunting this afternoon I pull up to the redlight at 22 and 49 80(1fz, 97 lx450, 194k miles) and it's running rough and the temp needle is spike high. Manage to get a mile through town to a gas station. Coolant low, no leaks. But boiling over in the overflow. No water in oil per dipstick or oil in antifreeze. Let the truck cool for a while, cranked it up and let it run, gurgling coolant out of the top of radiator, and big white type bubbles coming out of antifreeze, took a video but don't know how to post. Got it towed back to my house. Hope I didn't run it too hot for too long or cool it too quickly. Who is the man for the job around Jackson and what's a good ballpark $$ wise on getting it replaced?

Got it to Rob this morning. Sucks, but part of it I guess. I plan on keeping it forever, or as long as it let's me, so i guess it's worth it. Park that sucks is moving 3 months worth of hunting gear from one vehicle to another and being out of my cruiser right here in the peak of the season.

Cylinder #1 is the culprit.

Why is that Beno?

That's the same thing I thought. Usually it's #6

The way the 1FZ-FE is set up, the EGR valve is placed all the way at the back of the engine right at number 6. You get significant heat build up at the back of the engine, dissimilar metals (iron block and aluminum head) with the heating and cooling cycle, and an initially weak HG design from the factory and you get a nice recipe for HG failure.

That said, notice that these HG's are failing after hundreds of thousands of miles... that to me is not a design flaw, just a part of the engine life-cycle of the 1FZ. Toyota engineers according to the SAE white paper on the 1FZ wanted 300K KM's out of the engine before bottom end rebuild, so the HG going at 150-200K miles is well within acceptable failure range.

Basic parts to do the minimum required using OEM Toyota parts (with upgraded HG design) is only about $300 or so.

Yeah Im not mad. It sucks, but its a vehicle with 194k that I plan on keeping a while. We are going to replace a few things while in there, timing chain and such, PHH, and other seals and things. What all else should be considered while we have the head and easier access to some things?

EGR, intake clean out. water pump, fuel filter.

or just put a V8 in it ; )

Yep, we did a head gasket PM on mine [94] and Mo's [96 LX450 from dnp] after acquiring them. Mo's was recent, by my 80 had it changed at somewhere in the 140 - 160K mark [give or take, I forget] and it's happily approaching 335K nowadays.

Does Rob have a shop in Brandon? I am in Pascagoula and I am interested in a cruiser mechanic for a pm head gasket job in the near future. Is there a website or contact other than the above email?
