Hi all, I'm in the process of slowly building my trailer and am looking for suggestions on the axle. Are there a few that most here tend to like more/prefer than others?
Bad experiences with specific brands/supplier?
Any input is appreciated! Meanwhile I'm browsing through the many build treads available.
Thanks

Dexter is a brand with a good reputation. Available through Redneck Trailer Supply and others, they can custom build the axle you need with quality parts and deliver it at reasonable cost. Our M101 CDN will eventually get a new 3,500 lb Dexter with brakes. The factory axle could be rebuilt from a parking brake only axle with parts, but that'd cost more than the entire axle assembly, which will be under $400. Might as well go with new.

As Mike says...unless you're looking for something exotic, say Timbren or Torkflex, Dexter is the go to axle by all back yard builders...

I don't know if they are relatively new or not, but I did see that Dexter seems to be offering more suspension options off-the-shelf. I'm a leaf and coil guy, keep it simple is my motto, but they seem to be in competition with the more exotic options like Timbren and Torkflex. Dexter has Air Flex, E-Z Flex, and TorFlex. Any insights there for those who want a nice simple turnkey option for something other than leaf springs?

What about grabbing an axle out of an old Jeep ? plenty of those sitting in the junk yard.

It will be kinda heavy, require more maintenance than a dedicated trailer axle, and narrower than ideal for many applications, depending on how old it is and what you're trying to put it under.

On the other hand, if your tow vehicle is an old Jeep, maybe a ready source of spare parts?;)
