Folks, I picked up this trailer for $50, not title with electric brakes. It's approximately 11'11"x 45". I'm thinking a plywood deck and some removeable side boards. Can I use PT 2x4's and make another box to place ontop of the frame to accomplish this?? I'm thinking 2x4's on their sides spaced 16" to 24". Looking at the pics you can see the spacing of the crossmembers are about 4' apart.

I guess my other thought would be some angle iron edging (to hold the plywood) and add some angle iron crossmembers. Then add stake pockets and sides.

I think it comes down to weld or not to weld. If I strip down my old trailer (72"x 45") I can get some angle iron.

what is the intended purpose? that would determine what would or wouldnt work for framing

Good point, I should have stated that. This is for mulch / stone / ect... to be towed behind my 80. Also I'll be using it to haul my JD300 approx 700# lbs maybe 2 @ 1500#.

I'm starting to think the wood route would start adding a lot of unnecessary weight?? Or am I wrong in that thinking.

If I go the angle iron route I think I'll put down pressure treated 2x6-8's

thanks

if you go the pressure treated 2x route you may not need to add any additional bracing. I would try takinga 2x8 and clamping it down, then walk on it and see how much give it has. I wouldnt over build to much

mine has a ton of 2x6 or so boards, bottom and all sides. Surprised how heavy it is.

I'm bringing this back up. I finished the trailer a while back with removable side boards and a duratek floor. It's great for mulch, stone and even one ton of coal... It tows great, but it's only 42" on the inside. needless to say I've found myself needing a wider trailer and now I just picked up a small quad. I'm looking to widen this frame. Are there any thoughts on this from the group??

I really need it to be 4' wide on the inside and I really don;t need the removable boards. Should I just go over the top of the frame with another frame in either wood or steel? or weld onto this frame and make it wider that way. Of course I'm on a budget. I don;t want to spend too much money on this trailer when I can get a drop gate 5x8 for under $500...
