Hello,

I may be meeting up with my kids next weekend and journeying with them down to the Colorado River from Peach Springs on the Diamond Creek Road. After that, I am looking for backroads south from around the Seligman area. I see in the Delorme Atlas, a road labelled Williamson Valley Road, FR6 extending quite a distance towards Prescott? Anyone have any info on that area, such as are there places to camp, basic road conditions, too much private land, locked gates etc?

Also I see an intersecting power line road FR664. Looks like you might be able to make your way back to Highway 93. Years ago, access across the Baca Float area was pretty difficult. Anyone have info there?

Thanks!

Ernie

Howdy! Many, many years ago, I made a run from Prescott up to Seligman, via backroads. No 4x4, mostly ranch roads. Then we went down to the Colorado river right at the western border of Grand Canyon Nat. Park. It's on the Reservation, so you need tribal permits. I followed someone else that knows the area well. Google up on Prescott, and then backtrack north, and I think you will find that Williamson Valley Rd. is a main drag on the north end of town. I will check with my Prescott Connection to see if he can give me a refresher on the area. John

Yavapai County has a pretty good mapping application at: Yavapai County, AZ - Interactive Mapping Application

Be sure to use the 'Map Layers' function on the right side to turn on or off different layers as needed (i.e. 2007 aerial photos, road labels, etc.) This application lets you overlay land ownerships over the aerial, allowing you to see where the different roads are going through different owned lands.

Im pretty sure that WV road goes all the way to Prescott on the south end. Not sure how far north it goes though. My family has some propety up her about 15 miles south of Ashfork and maybe 10 west of the 89. Nice area back there. Hoping to do some exploring of my own out there in the coming months.

Howdy! just talked to my brother about this. He says WVR is good gravel all the way from Prescott to Seligman. He is not real sure of how to find it at the north end, but the locals should be able to steer you to it. It is a popular path between the two towns. John

Using Google Maps, MSN Maps, and FlashEarth.com, they all show the trail going all the way through. If all else fails give the Ranger a call @ (928) 443-8000.

Not sure if this will help. I ran HWY 93 to Williamson Valley Road last week and more. I included my complete KML track file. Just click on the KML file and it should open up Google maps or you should be able to import it. If not PM and I can email it to you.

If you are looking for a loop drive to see the sites while your wandering around down there. You can catch County 25 at Walnut Creek and head towards the BACA which is locked up. You can although take Forest Rd. 9 off of County 25 and it will take you over the hills to the south and you will end up near Camp Wood. Lots of neat places to camp in the pines or the cedars which ever you prefer. Forest 9 will run you right along the BACA. Once you get too camp wood road you can head southwest to Bagdad and head out to Hwy 93 from there through the Yolo ranch or just head back to Williamson Valley road. The Camp wood road will hit Williamson Valley Rd. where the pavement starts about 22 miles out of Prescott. I just spent two months elk hunting out there so there probably isn't a road I haven't been on near Camp wood or the Yolo ranch or the 7up ranch. There is alot of neat country on the north end of Juniper Mesa too, but some of the roads stop at the wilderness area so you have to go back out the way you came in.

Thanks to all who replied!

I have printed all of the responses and will use them to put together an exploratory trip in the near future. Unfortunately, it will not be this weekend--grandkids are sick so trip has been postponed.

Thanks again!
