There is a 40 that looks in good shape in Charleston CL. I was just looking around and have not seen it but pictures look like a solid truck and he is asking $5400. In trucks like this i will look closely to the rust on the frame. Good luck on your search

Sorry this is late.

That FJ was my brothers about 4 years ago. We skinned over the tub from the firewall back. It was a cheap sheet metal repair that looked pretty good. We also sanded the whole thing down and painted it.

He began to have a lot of engine troubles and a mechanic down in Charleston really screwed him over. Car sat in the mechanic's lot for 1+ years waiting on a part. So out of frustration he sold it and bought a 82' FJ.

The CL pictures are (were) from 4 years ago when he sold it on CL. He sent me the link last week and it confused the hell out of me to see his bloodhound and Montauk in the ad. The fact he was using such old pics is red flag to me.

You didn't miss anything there.......

^ Beat me to it. It does look to be pretty nice from the photos ....

Yup That one came to mind when I saw it today.

Any chance its st8rocks ? Did he sneak one in ?

Revival of My Search

Hey everybody.. I'm still looking for a 40. I'm more interested than ever before, and I wanted to revive my search.... Let me know if anyone has some new leads and 40's out there for sale... My contact info and what I'm looking for are already on the thread I think. Thanks for the help and interest!

The two listed above seemed to be good deal, and fit your criteria. Dont be afraid to travel for the right one. Granted, the long distance purchase is its own adventure but you might be able to get a local member to take a peek or you can make a day trip of it to go inspect one if you think its a winner.

as well as searchtempest listed earlier try themccumbers.com and search all of nc and sc
i found it flooded with 40s just mon/tues but in 8-12 range though some nice ones
make an offer, make a deal with dad, never know

Your first post has a pretty good description of your want list but maybe define a little bit more your criteria or give some feedback and the listings like above so people may have a better idea of what youre after. Also take the advice given and remember there may have to be compromise. I make a list of my wants and find the vehicle that has the most of them. See which on your list you could do without. Each purchase ive made yet has had a compromise.

Are you married to the idea of the ambulance doors? If i found the right one in most other aspects (ie RUST :D) then id hop on it. Then you decide to live with it or you can always save and swap to amby doors later though may need to drill for hinges or get some differnt hardtop pieces. <<< right 40 gurus?
comes back to get the right one for five thousand and make it right/play with the other 3....4....5.... :D

Solid advice.

What I'm looking for in a 40

Here's a better description of what I'm looking for in a 40, seeing as I've been on the forum for a little bit now, and have had my eyes opened a little bit...

The #1 thing that I'm looking for is one that isn't a complete rust bucket. One with a solid tub that doesn't have rust as an issue to where I would have to deal with having to cut it out and patch it up. So a solid body for sure is a plus!

Also I'd like to have one that doesn't have too many mile's on it, but seeing as they are older I understand they'll have a lot.

As far as the transmission goes I realize it's either gonna be a 3 or a 4 speed most likely. That being said I'd prefer it to not be a 3 speed on the column/tree (just because I've heard they are extremely hard to drive and I'm not the most experienced driver).

Engine wise I'm fine with the stock route (which I'm assuming is either a 6 cylinder or a 4 cylinder). I said way back at the start of this thread I'd like a v8, but I'd rather follow the advice from all of ya'll and not go that route.

Also under the hood I'd just say I'm looking for it to be mechanically sound and solid. It's gonna be my daily driver. For it to not have too many problems, if any down the road. Talking from experience with seeing my older brother who got a 88 jeep yj and has had numerous problems with it (had to have a new rear end put in, new transmission, and it's constantly in the shop, etc.) So like earlier just solid all around.

Interior wise, I don't really have too much of a preference. I'm fine with the stock seats in the front or if they've been upgraded. I'd prefer it to have the jump seats in the rear though.

Electrically speaking, I'd like to have all or most of the gauges/ switches in working order, but if not (I know since 40's are an older vehicle, and life's not perfect it probably won't be this way) that can be a little project for me to work on.

As for the rest of what's on my list that I'd prefer, but know I can't have it all:
-hardtop (don't really have a preference on the ambulance doors or barn doors)
-i'd like for it to come with a soft top or a bikini top
-color not really a big deal
-wouldn't mind a lift on it
-power steering
-power brakes
-any other useful or good upgrades

Ya'll can reach me on here by sending me a pm./ replying to the thread, or ya'll can email me at Tennisfanbrysen@yahoo.com, or ya'll can shoot me a text at 704/516/4029. My name's Brysen for those of you who don't already know, and I live in Charlotte. Looking for a 40 that's preferably under 10,000. Thanks for taking the time. I hope that help's ya'll to be able to help me more. Thanks again!
