I'm considering picking up a set of 36" bias ply TSL's (set for sale locally). Anyone have any opinions. Good tire? Bad tire? Do you think that dyna beads would help make them more steetable? I know people say it takes a while for them to warm up since they flat spot. I was wondering if the dyna beads would help make this less noticable. Any input would be appreciated. Also its for the FJ45 so I don't expect it to ride like a Lincoln.

Do it!
If you don't, let me get them!

With beads, they should ride smoothly enough. Can you clear 36's?

dyna beads do help alot the 4runner has the 34" ltb's bias ply and i don't have any problems with vibration id say get them it will force you to lift the 45:D

Okay you guys have convinced me. I plan on giving Alcan a call some time soon to order up a lift. I could probably clear a 35" but want to lift it anway. The other problem is that it will force me to do the power steering conversion.

spring over and 60 steering? 36's are a pretty big tire sprung under. It is easilly doable with a 4" lift and shackles, but most people I know who get 5" or better springs end up SOA anyways. Will you have to cut those nice wheelwells?

Well the 33's clear with no lift. I was thinking about getting them mounted and figure out how much lift I need. I really don't want to go to SOA because eventually I will move back to the Communistwealth of MA where its illegal.

Already have the RHD 60 box. I just have to get a pump and mount everything and run the lines.

No doubt. When I was thinking of moving back, I thought about the same thing. SInce my rig will seemingly never get back out of the garage, however, I might be able to get away with it.

Talking to wally last night and he was saying that running a saginaw pump with the 60 stuff gives it some real boost.

I no longer like you.....:flipoff2: I need new tires and I'm looking at the 36" Irok bias ply, but mine is a trailer queen. :steer:

I will be looking soon too... what is a realistic expectancy of bias ply tires if driven 3+ hours to get to the trails and then back? I only drive my 40 on occasion when not wheeling or driving somewhere to go wheeling. Is it just a waste at that point?

Well it looks like its not going to happen anyway. They guy told me that he would sell them to me and then took a better offer.

what a jerk. I hate people like that.

Jason just a suggestion, but Ive herd really uber good stuff about the interco Q78 tires. "best new england tire out there" so yah may wanna look into a set of those things for your beastly 45. and im thinkin of scrapin together some cash for that winch your swinging soon so that might help out a bit. p.s. if you ever need a hand wrenching my shop in new bedford isnt that far from you so lemme know if you need a hand.

p.p.s. what do you care about the mass suspension laws you trailer that rig ever year anyway =P besides if you think a mass state trooper has any clue as to the difference in soa and su your sadly mistaken. =D

And away we go......

You've been listening to too many of those Heep guys that need like 6" of lift to get a set of 33's on their rig. They need the narrow Q78 (35.5"h x 9.5"w) so they have some turning radius. Any tire that would be considered "the best New England Wheeling tire" needs to be siped. TSL's are not, Iroks are. Hell I'd get a set of LTB's if they made them in a 36 or 37. I'm not ready for 42's or 47's......yet. :hhmm:

I agree with Roger. I am running Q78's and like them a lot. The only thing they need are grooves in the center chevrons. If I ran them as a DD I would sipe some of the outer lugs, but that will promote tearing in the rocks.

Knowing how you plan to drive the 45 on and off road would help. I think an ideal setup would be a 4" lift and steering correction kit running 35x10.5 tires with extended shackles. The correction kit will get mixed responses but I have had good luck with mine on the 40 for 10 years. Having the springs move backward has good benefits on the road as well as the trail. I'm a fan of tall skinny tires and had good luck with the 35x10.5 SSR's which I ran for 4 years. They are siped, have good space between the lugs, and work well in the rocks. The Q's are much better off road. They tend to climb straighter than boggers and don't slide sideways on off camber stuff as much as the boggers. If you plan on DD'ing and wheeling the 45 I would get a set of the SSR's. They are relatively quiet, for a swamper, and the ride is very smooth. I'll probably get another set for the troopy someday. If you plan on wheeling more then the Q's would be a good choice.

If you closely watch cruisers w/ 12.5" tires go over and climb obstacles as compared to 10.5" tires, you'll see a difference in traction and staying planted. The 10.5's have a smaller contact patch with more weight on it. One downside though is you have to aim better. I found the BFG muds in a 12.5 to be a good tire but too wide, too much rubbing, and they did not stay as hooked up as the 10.5's. You should also consider weighting the rear of your PU somehow, say with a winch or something. Oh right, you have a Wally tub on there...never mind :grinpimp:.

That said, many may disagree. Just my observations in the woods with the NCC crew who mostly run Q's. Junior also mentioned switching from the boggers to the Q's.

After talking to Randy I think that I might go the SSR route because it although it won't be a DD it will see a fair amount of street time. Might just be a little while before I buy them. Going to figure out just how much lift I need and then lift it first and get the PS all set.

Youll love the SSR's excellent all around tire. Keep the sidewalls away from sharp rocks and roots and youll be good for years.

Boggers suck. :flipoff2:

There's always Michelin XZL's :) :) :)

I was looking at 38" XML's when I had the Beast and was going to one-ton's. Unfortunately Michelin tires usually have a pretty hard compound and very stiff sidewalls.

You can always get a set of TSL, a 12 pack of beer, and a hot knife or box of razor blades and sipe away. Just a lot of work IMO.

I know some guys swear by boggers, but I can't understand why, there's absolutely NO lateral stability with that tread pattern. Same thing with Baja Claws, and such. But everyone has a different driving style.
