Hello all, I am shopping for an FZJ80 and have an opportunity to have a friend deliver one from AZ in a few weeks. I am up in MA where 20-year old trucks are starting to rot, so I'd love to take advantage of this opportunity to get a rust free truck. Please let me know if you have one or know of one available.

I am going to use this to tow a small formula car on an aluminum trailer and drive to VT in the winter.

Requirements:
Must be able to drive 3,000 miles without any major issues

Wish list:
As close to stock as possible
Tow package a plus
Service records a plus
Good paint a big plus, but I know hard to come by in AZ
Would prefer a Toyota to a Lexus
Lockers not important
Favorite colors would be Nightshadow (blue), Dark Gray / Moonglow, Dark Emerald, or Sage

If anyone has a good lead on a solid truck, please reply here, PM me, or email dave@broda-racing.com

Thanks all,
Dave T

What kind of $ range? That is going to be key in the search

Good call. $7k is my target. Could go higher for a truck that checks a lot of my wish list items, but needs to stay under $10k.

Your preferred colors are not likely to have good paint. Anything with clear coat is likely to be faded.

Hi Hondo,

I saw your CL ad, and your truck looks fantastic. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, it is out of my price range. I have a friend with a 100, and although you are probably right that it would be better for my intended purpose, I have always wanted an 80 series and am finally in a position to buy one.

Best of luck with your sale. Someone will get a great rig.

Best,
Dave

My 1997 is for sale, but a little higher than your asking price. I know you're looking for an 80 series, but for towing purposes the 100 series would likely be a better choice.

while 80s have a classic appeal, the 100 would by far be a more rewarding tow rig. The prices of early 100s are getting very reasonable and the 4.7 is a proven power plant.

Speaking of power plants, have you considered an FJ80 ('91-'92)? It'll swallow your 3,000 mile trip......slowly. But it'll do it with nary a mechanical complaint. And once you're home, you can explore any/all wilderness with any other vehicle that's out there. It's got the 80 style you're after (who can blame you?) and the 3FE is the motor that just doesn't fail.

All motors fail, eventually.

Thanks Captain Obvious :flipoff2:

.....But the tractor-like straight sixes of Toyota have to be near the top of the durability spectrum

Dave - no affiliation but maybe this is worth checking. Good luck!

Edit - another one.

Thanks Captain Obvious :flipoff2:

That's master of the obvious to you:flipoff2:

The assumption that the 3FE is more durable is highly debatable. If they last longer, it's because the owner died of boredom.

Thanks for the input guys. The only reason I ruled out the 3FE is because I'll occasionally be towing a ~3,000 lb trailer.

tlin, I want that blue one bad, but I had my friend check it out and there are a lot of issues which are not mentioned in the CL ad. It would need a real thorough PPI before I would consider it and the logistics are not working out.

The gray one has a lot of really strange title history on the carfax and is flagged for a "Major" title issue.

At this point, I've missed my window to get a truck delivered from AZ, so I am back to looking at rusty trucks in New England. Thank you very much to everyone who posted suggestions. There are plenty of 100's in New England with little to no rust, so maybe that's what I'll end up with. Now that I've missed my window for an AZ truck, the pressure is off a bit and I can take my time to find the right truck.

Thanks again.
