I'm planning on doing regular checks on it, like compression, luckily it uses the same plug thread as the 3B so I have the right adaptor.
checking only leads to costly repairs... don't check anything....!!!!!

HAHAHA! Yes! I agree, in this case, ignorance is bliss and I will blindly assume the stupid thing works fine if it passes the tests.

...of course I will install a turbo on it and likely take my brand new injection pump with the boost advance and install that on there as well :D

Turbo's make everything better 100% of the time. From my experience 80% of the time its 100% reliable too. :p

Hey! 50% of the time I'm correct 100%, so 80% is even better....right....

Absolutely! 60% of that 80% though I just think I'm right so YMMV :p

Hope this 1L works out for you, would be nice to see some positive returns on all the effort.

I have an engine!....err...again....
Ok, runs like a tractor (makes me miss my 3B), sounds clean, 500psi even across all cylinders, 158,000 kilometers, a little surface rust, and now mine.

Hey that percentage talk looks like an attempt at humour- Take it to chat ok?

Good show Mat- and good luck with this one..

I apologize sincerely for precived attempt to clutter this thread. I meant no harm and hope this thread despite my behavior will continue on track.

Well wishes aren't derailing (but are much appreciated - thanks), guys, relax. There is regular chit chat relevant to threads and then there's what has happened in the past on many occasions. That was something else entirely. Besides, like I said, I've got an engine so from my point of view this thread is done.

lol Guy LeDouche rides again!

Can you check diesel coolant for combustion gasses? That would be a dead ringer to see if the head is cracked.

Hey! Here's some tech to add to this thread!!!

I realize its too late for Mat, and he's not checking anything else on this engine anyways :p BUT, yes you can do the combustion gas check on a diesel. That's one of the steps I took when I diagnosed my bad HG last year. The fluid in the tester changed colour right away.

Good point- I wonder if the Detroit Diesel coolant test strips we use as part of the regular marine service sched. would show that up? they can detect oil and whether you are not using DD brand Powercool as well... Hmmm..

Since we're doing tech...
Well I ran it till it got nice and warm and it wasn't bubbling up in the radiator. Also when I did the compression test I did it with the radiator open and got 500lbs even on all, so I think this one might be a (fingers and toes crossed while knocking on wood and kneeling down to praise the fu&$ up fairies) winner.
The oil in it isn't new but it is clean, a light coloured yellow/grey...it's weird, almost not diesel like.
Now I'm just torn if I should turbo it.
Stock numbers on this engine are crap:
72hp@4200
105tq@2000
21.5:1 compression
90 bore
86 stroke

If I turbo it I can use the injection pump from the 2LT with the boost fuel advance option.
But since this is a smaller engine I don't think the turbo I picked for the 2LT will work. Likely it's too big.
After extensive talks with John, I chose a T3 with an exhaust AR of .42 and Intake .60. Since this engine is smaller and has a slightly higher compression (2LT has 20:1), I likely will need a smaller exhaust AR, maybe a .38 or .36.
Damn turbo math!

Great news Mat. 500 psi across the board means a turbo with conservative boost is definitely a go. Actually, 500 psi across the board is pretty damn amazing in an old engine. I had to actually look for the 1L engine because I had never heard of it. It is actually just the L engine - the beginner. I think that was the one in the famous kill the Hilux episode on Top Gear. (IMO, the salt water dunking being the most impressive of the restarts.)

So, where did the engine come from, a 2WD hilux?

A local 2wd 1 ton truck. The guy bought it in Ontario I think, about 15 years ago. Drove it here eventually, sold the box, was going to flat deck it, got distracted, sat in a yard and moved from one end to the other for several years, then the transmission was removed to put in his other truck about 3 months ago and now I got the engine.
The dash in this truck is mint and unmolested. He wants to scrap the rest, the cab has rusty floors but the doors and interior are mint, it's a 1982.

Here's a small block you can use. I wonder if your wire wheel/dremel skills can clean it up?
