I am in the middle of a frame off build for a 1972 FJ-40. I reached out to Rain76king to see if he had any suggestions and he told me to post to your thread. I have worked with Poor Wally on the body but he is too far away to help with the other stuff. I live in Southern Maine about 30 min South of Portland. I am pretty close to getting the rig completed, but need some help from someone who is tight with these rigs. I would appreciate any help you all can send my way. I have posted some photos of my work to date for your viewing pleasure.

Call or pm (start a conversation) here on mud with Kina (cruiserland) of North Country Land Cruisers. He's just south of North Conway and is very proficient with cruisers.

Thanks Yodafrick. I will PM Cruiserland. As I said, would really like to get the rig on the road for the summer.

I need help getting the engine to run. I can get it to fire with starting fluid, but can not get it to run. I am holding off on completing the front body installation until I do this. Once I know for sure the engine will run I can push to get the rest of the rig put together and hopefully on the road soon. Cruiserland has a full plate at the moment so was unable to help. Not sure if my issue is the fuel pump or something more. Kina from Cruiserland did offer some tips that I have to try this weekend. If you have any ideas or know of anyone who is solid with these that would be awesome. I am getting really anxious to get the thing on the road.

Was the Weber rebuilt? What can you tell us about the engine? Was it rebuilt? Did it run correctly before?

Sure, Sorry about that. I found the rig in a field. PO noted that it had run 1.5 years earlier. The tub was so rotted I decided to just rip it apart. Gas tank was gone, no battery etc.. I was able to manually crank the engine by hand to verify the engine was not seized but never started it. I then had a local mechanic scope the engine to be sure it was worth putting $$$ into. He noted that it was barely broken in based on the cylinder walls and that it was internally in great shape. I pulled the engine, cleaned it and changed all the gaskets, but the head gasket as it looked tight etc.. No noted oil leaks before I tore it down. Again, the engine looked really clean and solid when I looked in the valve cover, oil pan etc... the oil was actually clean when I drained it. Put it back together and added a new weber 38 carb, electronic ignition and 6 to 1 header. Fired the engine with starter fluid but could not keep it running. Looks like I had a fuel pump issue as it leaked. Was advised to just pour gas into the carb to check to see if it would keep running. I tried that and was unable to get it to run. Pulled the fuel pump, stock mechanical, and cleaned it up. I reinstalled it and it now no longer leaks. Can fire the engine but it will not run at this point. I also made sure that I set up the distributer to point to the #1 cylinder as well before I tried to fire it. She pulls strong with the starter fluid but will not run for more than 4/5 seconds. That is the 30 second summary of where I am today. Thanks again for the input. I am mechanically inclined, but not a mechanic. My hope is to find someone who really knows these and can help me solve the issue and get it running. Thanks.

Rick, that works for me. I have sent you a PM with my cell phone number. Many thanks.

you sure your getting spark?
I know you said you got it to run a little but was that before the electronics?
Good luck!

Fuel delivery not spark. Check filter and fuel pump and lines. Sounds like a quick fix.

Thanks Bob.
I tend to agree. I say bad fuel pump.

I'm in Arundel and might be able to help out. I pretty much have the same set up as you.

Thanks for the input. I will try to isolate the fuel pump and get fuel into the carb. RC-10 do you live over near the Dutch Elm Golf Course by chance? If so, I think I have seen your rig. I do have a new fuel pump on order from Cruiser Outfitters but they are backordered at the moment. I may have to look to get a used one unless I switch to an electric pump which I was hoping to avoid. RC 10 I will send you a PM to see if we can connect.

That's me. I use to live on limerick rd and now I moved a half mile away on liberty acres.
