Looking for a good machine shop

Friends,

I'm looking for a good machine shop that can rebuild the 2F out of my '77 FJ40. My Toyota expert here in Charleston doesn't trust anyone down here to do the job right. Does anyone know of a good shop in Columbia or the upstate (or even Charlotte).

(I'd try it myself, but I don't have a garage to work in.)

If you want the best rebuild in the USA you can bring it to Peter Merriam in Duluth, GA. Merriam Automotive. He is a master mechanic and literally specialized on 2Fs when he was overseas for some 20+ years. Best legacy cruiser mechanic there is.

any idea what he charges for different stuff? block work, head work, etc?

I honestly have no idea...and he is in Atlanta...but give him a ring. Not even sure if he would take on a rebuild?

I know he is expensive that is where my buddy Mike got his 2f and transmission from, but he is the very best. Will do it perfect for ya.

who do you use in mt P? there is a shop over there that almost always has a cruiser around they are working on. 40s, 60s 80s mostly. i have seen the occasional 55. ask your mechanic about simons balancing and machine. they have been here in charleston for many, many years and have an excellent reputation from everyone i have talked to. i don't believe they will do the rebuild but excellent work from what i have heard.

I use McIntosh imports over by the armory. He's an awesome Toyota mechanic, but won't do the rebuild due to his proximity to the salt water and the difficulty of keeping everything clean.

you might want to talk to arnold automotive on johnnie dodd's. i don't know much about them but i do know they work on quite a bit of cruisers. they are the ones i have usually seen with a cruiser there.
