Had the dealer send me a couple pics of the undercarriage, not really sure what to make of them, especially the pic behind the wheel, (body mount?) anyone know what could be going on with that?

Would appreciate some more experienced eyes on these pics!

Wow, did they pull that one out of a river...

Just curious, how many miles are on it?

106k miles... Salty climate (hawaii)

Yeah i do think its probably a pass, but its in hawaii (where i am) which is what got me interested, very rarely do they come up here. However literally no service history or anything, on a different island too so i cant easily go check it out.

To me the body mount looks like some kind of under coating.

But just from one skid plate picture I see four missing bolts and evidence of rust in the holes. I concur with 04UZJ

yeah, noticed that too, lots of missing bolts, makes me think there may be many more missing bolts elsewhere...

Thanks for the help!

To be fair the splash shields quite often end up with missing bolts, even for dealer-maintained rigs, so that alone wouldn’t disqualify a candidate. But the rust and zero history are bigger issues.

Dealer service isn’t a guarantee of competence.. many of us have broken recirculate doors on dealer-only vehicles.

Fair point. I guess to set expectations- rust on the skid plate does look pretty bad, and on the bolt holding the LCA, but otherwise seems relatively clean? I guess what would be an acceptable level of rust to not worry too much about?

It's all relative to the local environment. Here in Vermont where they salt the roads, that doesn't seem scary. Do you have ocean salt air corrosion issues in hawaii? How does this compare to a typical/similar age vehicle in your locale? Dealers failing to install or breaking bolts mounting the skid plates is all too common an issue.

Its also relative here, depending on your distance from the ocean and where you live (up the mountain, leeward, windward, etc...) My '99 100 series is a little rustier than this, mostly surface rust on frame, nothing bad at all. I have more problems with body rust and a couple trouble spots. But i dont live near the ocean and when i do get any salt spray i rinse it off same day. My skid plate however doesnt have any missing bolts.

Looking again on a much larger screen I was thinking that rust "pattern" looks different than most I've seen posted on here. Didn't seem very deep seated, not into the suspension arms and frame and such. If it weren't an island away I'd say go take a look and see if it's just the splash shield.. but no service history is yet another red flag.

yeah depending on how desperate i get in my search i may go check it out. its been on the lot a while...

The other big potential disqualifier would be if the KDSS valve is rusted to oblivion. Hard to predict given the atypical corrosion pattern on this rig, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's fine. I wouldn't say that about most of the rusted rigs posted here.

My dealer serviced high mileage 2009 had lots of missing bolts on the skids. I think 6 if I recall. Not that big a deal. Try to get pics of kdss and frame. Maybe a shot if the rear frame?

What is the transport fee to Hawaii these days?

Transport cost from california is roughly $2,100. Interisland its about $500.

Might be worth the transport tax to pick your sample.

Yeah... probably correct, but all in probably $3500 if you include me flying out and driving to the port (assuming west coast). Hopefully theres a bit of a price correction coming in to the new year, that would make it a bit less painful.

That truck looks like it has seam sealer on the suspension arm not rust I have a feeling this truck was in an accident and is was not reported to the insurance company. Same with all the finger prints on the skid plate maybe dust from a body shop. That's just my opinion not saying I am right.

The stock skid plate is made of the steel equivalent of tin foil and will rust like this with only slight exposure to a salty environment (like Hawaii). I see zero that I would worry about if the rest of the vehicle checks out.

The second picture seems like it rusted in a bad spot which can make your mounts fragile. Not worth even if you consider wielding work.
