good am all,

i am here in germany and have decided to go look at a 1988 lj70 turbo diesel. my only thing is i dont know much about 70s at all. for instance what is the stock motor, did it come with turbo or is this aftermarket thing. any help would be awesome.
my goal is to take this rig back to the states at the end of the year. shipping will cost about 2 grand so i need to keep that in mind when i buy.

thanks again
here is a link to the truck in germany

Do a search for 2LT ,its the engine found in these.Im not going to going to go into it,there is more than enough said already.
If the engine is stock ,it will be a factory turbo.
They have different names in different countries
Australia they are called a Bundeera,Japan they are Prados and other places they are Landcruiser II
They are also referred to as "light duty 70 series"

LJ/KZJ 70/73/77/78
beautiful trucks, very comfortable, very capable
s*** engines, the rest of the truck is damn near bullet proof
usually pretty cheap to buy

unless planning an engine swap STAY away.

So what engine or year of 70 should I look for. It has to be factory to get it back home. That's my only restriction.

Thanks again. Saved me a 3 hour each way drive to see it.

It does not have to be a 70 series either. Just want a reliable diesel. Thanks again

BJ series
HJ series
PZJ series
HZJ series

are you looking for RHD or LHD?
What is the budget?

cheers

i want LHD so it is the same when i get back the states. i really only want to spend about 5-7 grand because it will cost about 2 more thousand to ship back. and i have to stay with 1988 and older to get by on the 25 year and older import.

the hardest thing when looking on the german websites as translating the pages and then it sometimes is not a proper translation.

thanks for the input and help

when i was reading about the vehicles i could bring in, they list landcruiser MPV, and not pickups. so does that only apply to vehicles 25 years and younger, so like a 1989 and newer, and can i bring a 70 series pick up in as along its 1988 or older?

As long as it complies with the 25 year rule the type of Cruiser does not matter.
The one exception..... You may want to make sure the State you intend to import your Cruiser into does not have an issue with Diesel engines.

importing to baltimore MD but most likely register in VA. i heard they are a bit crazy but did not think to ask them yet.

thanks for that heads up

California is the State I was referring to. :D
However it might be prudent to check with your home State. I know the State of Georgia has no issues with Diesel engine.

A 73/74 series is probably the best allrounder.

I know the above is just a typo. I am sure you meant to say 75/79 Series is probably the best all rounder. :D

so i looking around at more cruisers here and more and more is see just a liter size for the engine, no where in the add does it say it a LJ/BJ/HJ or anything, is there a cross reference somewhere i can look up that will tell me for example, 3.5 liter = LJ or PJK or what ever. very new to all these variations for sure

thanks again

the only options that are legal for you to bring in (unless you take my advice) is pre 1989.
BJ, HJ, FJ, LJ,
LJ has coil suspension
the rest have leafs

as i said, look at the serial number:

Nope ,I genuinely regret selling my FJ73 with the 1HZ .It was 99% perfect after I poured $20k inot over a 6 year period.
I sold it without a squeak or rattle and the brakes would stop a road train.
It only had 2 defects when I sold it
One of them was the vacumm hose for the 4wd would come off occasionally and the oil pressure gauge was not functioning.

this is what i found,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Toyota_engines

and a 3.5 liter is basically 13b

A 13B is a 3.4 litre and so is a 3B.The landcruiser BJ74 has a 13BT,turbo version with direct injection or THERE IS the BJ73 with a 3B engine, naturally aspirated with indirect injection.

There are 13B,14B 3.6l and 15B 4.0l and 11B 3l,but these are fitted to trucks,vans and buses.

You would be surprised how many owners do not know the correct alphanumeric code for their landcruiser,so you have to be careful when reading classifieds.

It looks like you found a PZJ7* ,too young for your purposes. These have a 1PZ 5cyl engine 3.5L engine based on the 6 cyl 1HZ 4.2l engine

Basically the 1st letter or letters tell you the engine as in B,L,H,PZ,HZ
The J means landcruiser(toyota buses tractors cars all have their own letter)
The numbers at the end generally denote length but in pre 1990 they also denote turbo such as 71/74 series and in post 1990 can denote coil front suspension as 74/78/79 series
In post 1998 models a D after the engine letter denotes turbo.

Then if you look on the aluminium plate on the firewall,it will have the model as well as the gearbox,t/case trim code, paint code and the intended market and code for the plant it was built in

Simple ,huh? :D
