are you sure you have no power steering? a 60 without it is extremely hard to handle. basically you will use all your power to turn the wheel at all. Maybe it is just not as smooth as whatever you are used to?

Actually yea, you could be right. My other car is a starquest which is extremely easy to turn.

simple test: if you have any success turning the wheel with one hand, you are either extremely strong, or your power steering is working :D

cheers,

It is supposed to connect to that coffee-can looking container. Its a vaccum line and that's a vaccum canister. Anyone know exactly what it is.

That is the charcoal canister. It collects the gas vapors from the gas tank.

And while you're at it...
Be sure and set a trap for that seagull that seems to be using your engine compartment as a toilet.:hillbilly:

Please note that you should put AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID in your power steering reservoir, NOT power steering fluid. Dexcron!

There a few spots on that engine that lack rust. That's what's missing. But I guess it might be rusty under all the caked on oil.

will do mate, they like cheese and crackers right? maybe i could rig up one of my bear traps with a hair trigger.

I remember when the power steering went on my old 60. There was no assist when the vehicle was standing still and idling, but rev up the motor and it would start to work. It would be fine when driving along. presumably because the motor was revving.

Eventually it started to sound like Moby Dick so I replaced the pump and box with a second hand set and all was good again. Whale sounds are a dead giveaway there is something wrong with the system. It can happen with low fluid, or it can happen with worn parts (usually the pump)

On one occasion I drove it without the pump belt. You had to be The Hulk to turn it. A non pumping power steering system is extremely hard to steer, compared to a normal 'manual' steering system, because the steering box is pumping all that fluid around the system.

I actually found the 60 series to be very light to turn. Compared to my 80 series, and other Toyotas too. Infact it seems to be a bit of hit and miss as to how well power steering works on toyota commercials around here.
