I've been using wal mart's 20L pail. The specs are really similar to Delo 400. IIRC it's under $40.

I heard the same thing from a trucker this past winter. But according to him you have to get the commercial grade diesel oil. He said they don't always have it. I have never looked for it, so can't say.

Walmart in the US use to have Delo 400 fairly cheap. I haven't checked on that in about 18 months. At $84 for a bucket, I am fine with the $60 buckets of Rotella from Walmart or the Castro oil I got from Western Star.

Dont go cheap on the oil, C mon you guys, NO FxxxING CHEAP OIL

It never pays, in the long run, to put cheap oil into your engine. Use new good quality oil and change it often. Go by the highest SAE and API standards with 15W40 grade. The "W" stands for Winter Grade heavy duty. Even better, add a litre of Lucas Oil Stabilizer when you do the oil change. Buy better grade oil filters like NAPA Gold, not Fram Crappy Tire.
~Thanks from your engine!

Looking at an old Delo 400 bottle and the Wal Mart pail:

Delo 400: API CI-4, CH-4, SL, SJ

Wal Mart Tech 2000 - API CI-4, CH-4, SL, SJ

Both approved for Cummins and Detroit Diesel.

Like Jeff said, inexpensive is different than cheap. I'm comfortable with this stuff in my Cruisers.
I should have an oil analysis done at the next change, that'd be interesting.

I agree on the inexpensive vrs cheap distinction. At 11L every 5000 kms (+/- 2 months), I am always looking for inexpensive.

Norm, the one rating Delo 400 has that none of the other have is the Japanese Jaso DH-1. It might of made a difference 15 years ago. I doubt if it does make a difference now. I have also noticed that I get better oil pressure build-up and readings using Delo 400 and the Castro Tection Extra than with the Rotella-T. Still, I think I am quite safe with the Rotella-T.

You're right, I missed the Jaso DH-1 rating. I checked a newer Tech 2000 pail and FWIW it's also CI-4 PLUS and CJ rated.

I haven't noticed any pressure build up or reading differences between it and Delo in either of my Cruisers or my older Jetta turbo diesel. Could just be the super accurate factory gauges... :grinpimp:

The codes are testing of oil to industy standards.

As an aside. Was rumoured that bmw used to only honour thier engine warrantee if it could be proved the engine only ever ran on the specified quaker state oil. Never bothered to check into that rumour though...

What about 76 products? There are a few distributors around town :)

Wut? And what happened to that Bio thread you hard started awhile ago?

I ended up getting the 10 litre jug of Shell Rotella T, think it was 36$. And when Ciaran changed my BEB's he had suggested to use the Lucas as well, which I did.

I'm pretty sure I was paying 60.00/20L for Rotella T from Can. Tire. So with your math Jeff, wouldn't you have been better off buying a 20L pail? You would have saved yourself 12.00.
I just changed my oil, I used Shell 5W-30, it was a raffle prize I won at the Stave Lake clean up. I got a 12 liter box and the oil change sucked up 8. Dang those Toyota motors hold a lot of oil.
