A noisy gearbox, huh. Ooh...Any suggestions for local shops to sort out a noisy gearbox?
Good things to know for sure...I'm in Annapolis if you need an extra ear. I do pretty much all of my own work, but not transmissions. I did just do the under drive and part time kit in my transfer case though, so not afraid to get into that kind of stuff.Which gearbox?
Can you describe the noise: recent change in pitch/intensity/character, more noticeable under load or when coasting ---?
It sounds like the transfer case, its just noisy. Everything shifts fine, no grinding noises. First noticed a couple months ago and last week between 45-65+ I heard a loud high pitched whine which sounds like a bad bearing, it comes and goes and my guess its towards the back. Just normal driving around its noisy, can kinda hear the gears in the box, not related to engine RPMs, nothing changes when coasting in neutral. I suppose it could be a diff, need to crawl under and check oil levels. Couple weeks ago I changed and transfer case oil, no difference and no shavings ect in the oil. It was clean.Which gearbox?

Bethesda, MD? Go up to Lexus of Rockville. There is a tech there whose family has 3. I have forgotten his name (John?), the service manager is Kevin. The tech spent an hour going over mine and made a ton of helpful suggestions. According to Kevin, all three are Toyota/Lexus techs and are completely capable.I'm sure this has been beat to death, apologies cant seem to find the thread.
