I'm an undergraduate student at USC with an 80. Soon, I want to take it to a mech. to figure out what sort of work it needs to keep it running etc. I know there is some problem with the starter and transmission. However, after several trips to the local dealer, I've become somewhat leery of them. For example I recently had the U-joint replaced and after two trips, they have not been able to correctly balance the thing plus they had a lot of trouble with the main oil seals. I want to take it to a mech who is familiar with 80's but don't know of any in the Columbia Area. If anyone can recommend one, I'd really appreciate it. This summer, I plan on getting some new suspension and tires so I can hopefully join you guys on the trail.

can't recommend anyone in columbia but you can't go wrong with Ralph Hayes Toyota here in Anderson; prob. to far away for you but they do top notch work and give UC members a 25% discount on parts and labor.

Good luck and hope to see you and your 80 on the trails soon

I was trapped in the parts buisness for a couple of years here in Columbia, and of all the shops we dealt with, at best, they seemed to be hit or miss. There just don't seem to be any shops in Columbia that I could recomend unconditionally.
I wouldn't consider myself a mechanic, but I have done a few knuckle rebuilds, engine/tranny/tcase/axel swaps, head gaskets, locker installs, and so on, and I wouldn't mind taking a look at your 80 if you want to do some trouble shooting, or just figure out what your going to need to keep it on the road. Feel free to shoot me a PM.

Way to go

This is what makes this site and the uc club so great, helping out the fellow cruiser nut or newbie when you can. You the man good on you.:beer::beer::beer:

I'm trying, but I even sent the guy a PM and still haven't gotten a response. How am I suposed to sabatage a perfectly good 80, if I can't get a response? It's getting harder and harder to turn perfectly good running Cruisers into lawn ornaments.
