Saw this for sale on Sunday. The guy is asking $3800. I didn't check mileage. Claims "runs good, shifts smooth" and it comes with a snowplow. No cage, no rear seats. I'm curious but not sure if the price is too much, in line, or what? Any help from these three pics? I know, not a lot of info to go on, but a ballpark would even be appreciated.

Just from first glance..... looks like a real project rig to me.... not original are the lights on the side near the vents, looks rusty and bondo'ed,.... ball and claw axles, drums, F engine....

I was thinking it was pretty rusty, too. Didn't crawl under to look. Didn't have the time to really poke and prod.

What are "ball and claw" axles? I'm clueless, pretty much, when it comes to 40s. Heck, I'm clueless when it comes to 80s, too.

Thanks for the PM, Chris.

I'm thinking that any 40 I would buy would be a long-term project truck to use as a plow truck in the interim!

Whoops... pre' 68 is the ball and claw (which preceded the birfield) so you may or may not have it depending on the production date (not model year~varies~).,... no big deal either way, for a plow truck it would be OK but not for that coin!

I know--this is a loaded question with too little info to go off of, but what would a discerning buyer consider offering for this? $2000? less? more?

ah, heck, I should just quit thinking about it.

$500 rust bucket money pit or $500 flat tow with the 80 and wheel the snot out of it. You may be best served to stop thinking about it.;)

Honestly, if it runs well with no apparent black smoke or foul noises... shifts OK and has floors... and has most of the OE stuff... I would say 1-2K$... it is a rare bird and looks alot better than the last 500$ 40 I bought... then again the sheetmetal is better on the earlier cruisers so I would look close at it... it is a rare truck no less.

Good reading here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=132481

unless i could get it for a song and treat it as a plow truck for a bit--would be cheaper than a tractor or anything else--and have more potential....if it actually runs okay . . .

further thinking is kinda pointless without more information on the truck so I either need to go look at it again and/or call the guy.

68 should be the course spline birfs, 4 wheel drum brakes, the slightly better F(than mine), but the start of the really crappy sheet metal.

Its still cheaper than what I paid for mine, but I didn't know any better and it came with enough parts to almost build a second one.

But your looking at an assload of work if you ever decide to use it seriously.

Thanks, guys. I was wondering about the sheet metal quality, too. I think I'll just pass on this. If it was a smokin' deal, I might consider it, but I know I'm really, really far away from thinking about taking on a second rig. A garage is more important to store something like this right now.

Anyone else want an overpriced project truck? ;p
