So, I tried to be a nice guy and loan my truck out to my brother in law. I mean, he's family right? Well, I got home from a trip to find all the belts broken. Sweet. He said that they broke and he immediately shut off the truck and had it towed to my house. I fixed the belts yesterday and started up the truck. It started and ran fine for about 2 miles until the engine heated up. It started knocking really bad when i stepped on the gas and i checked the temp gauge. It was almost pegged. I pulled back into my house and looked under the hood and saw that a hose from the radiator to the engine had popped off and was smoking. I opened the oil filler cap and there was a little smoke coming from there too. I let it cool off and fixed the hose problem and started my rig. It started fine and didnt knock at all...until it heated up again. Then the gauge slowly rose to the danger level and it started to knock again. The strange thing was that the radiator fluid was cold. I'm kinda new to the whole fix it myself thing but i bought the truck to learn. Hopefully someone here can help. Life isn't the same without her. Thanks in advance.

Stuck thermostat?

If your coolant is cold but the temp guage is pegged, could it be that the thermostat is stuck closed? I don't know much about FJ60s nor where the temp is taken. But, I can't think of another reason one side of your cooling system is cool and the other is hot other than this.

From one noob to another...

If one belt dies and shreads it does not take long before it eats away at the other belts..

It can happen, it sucks, but can happen..

Yeah, the story doesn't make sense to me either. But, regardless i have to fix the truck. I can't find the thermostat. My manuals show a picture of what it looks like, but no location.

Change the oil and look carefully when you do it..

Before you fitted the belts did you try to turn the water pump by hand?Perhaps it could be jammed also remove the thermostat and check it opens like previously suggested.cheers

there should be a hose going from the top of the radiator to the top of the motor. where the hose connects to the motor there should be a fitting held in by (from memory) two bolts. the thermostat lives under there.

im also thinking maybe the water pump is frozen up or just stuck. try turning it by hand (MOTOR OFF!) or look at it while the motor is running to see if maybe the pulley isnt turning...that could be why your belt broke in the first place...
