I have been working on getting the oil pressure gauge to operate properly in my 1991 LJ78 with the 2.4 L diesel. I have jumped the leads going to the gauge, which causes the gauge to peg, which I understand means the gauge itself is OK. I have replaced the sending unit twice and I get no change. When everything is together and I turn on the ignition all the gauges except the oil pressure bump up to a minimum level. When I start the motor all the gauges act appropriately, except the oil, which doesn't budge.

Can anyone think of something I'm missing (which wouldn't be saying much! I'm OK with a wrench, but I'm no technician)? I am confident that I have oil pressure, for one thing, because the engine hasn't failed, eventhough I have been running it a bit. Oil drips out of the hole when I remove the sensor and I have (carefully) run a stiff wire into the hole with no resistance. I will appreciate any ideas you can throw at me. Thanks

Do you have the wiring manual for the 70-series Cruisers? Page 16 shows the wiring for the oil pressure sending unit and gauge, my advice would be to go through and ohm all of the wires to make sure there isn't a bad connection somewhere.

I haven't been able to find manuals (in English) for my Prado. Can you suggest anywhere online to find them?

I had to repair a break in my oil pressure sender wire at one point. These wiring harnesses get pretty brittle with age, and it's all together possible you have a similar problem.

Also, I think I read somewhere sometime that some of the Toyota gauges can get damaged by the test you did. Hopefully this is not the case for you.

If you're not set on having the in-dash gauge working I'd say install an aftermarket gauge. The factory ones don't tend to work great even when they are working, and really aren't much more informative than an oil pressure light.

Mine has never worked either. I gave up after a few minutes of messing with it. My symptoms are different. Mine is buried at the bottom and does not even show the needle in the window. Led me to believe someone in the past had fried it and I couldn't find one of those gauge sets for anything resembling a reasonable price.

My oil pressure gauge worked great but today, I could not find the needle. Much like yours, mine is buried at the bottom. Is there a known fix to unbury the needle and to get it to work? Thanks

Not that I am aware. I never pursued it though, so haven't really looked any more. I have after market gauges for everything and do not even have the Toyota sender installed, so the gauge wasn't going to work anyway without more gymnastics than I was willing to do.

Thank you. I would to get the gauge working again

My oil pressure gauge needle is buried way down. It worked perfectly for the past couple months, since I replaced the sender. Before that, the original sender worked sometimes only. Has it happen to your needle? How can I fix it? Thank you.

It's funny you mention aftermarket gauges. I'm thinking that might be the best way for me to go, too. Thanks.
In the long run it will save you a lot of grief to just go the aftermarket route.

No, that's not the right one. Your batteries are in parallel; still ~12V.

In the future make use of Megazip EPC drawings to figure out your part numbers. You can also use ToyoDIY to do reverse searches to see what other models the parts came in. Many cross back to north american vehicles. (including your oil pressure sender).
