look at ToyoDIY and plug in a 0000001 serial number.

Thanks John..........I assume that means it will take another 5 years before the LJ78 starts showing up in the U.S.

um, yes and no.
there is a couple in the states already. i am not saying they are there legally or not and no they did not get there from me.

1990 is the first year of the true time bomb.

horny for one are yah?

I have noticed 3 distinct groups of people on the forum when it comes to the subject of the LJ78.
The first group sees the glass half full ( I am in this group - perhaps foolishly.)
The second group sees the glass half empty ( this group may or may not have had an adverse experience with the LJ78 but has read numerous bad reports on the forum and therefore are somewhat leery of the Cruiser.)
The third group sees the glass overheated, broken and stuck on the side of the road awaiting additional funding. ( I assume you would be firmly rooted in this category.)
Always fun talking to you...................................1978HJ45

i see three groups as well.
the foolish, these are the ones that read the reports and say "it won't happen to me" and remind me of stories of Russian Roulette. BANG.
the cautious, these are the ones that have no experience but read the reports and then walk away enlightened.
the experienced, these are the ones that have personal experience with the concerns, report the concerns to the masses out of respect for others and shake their heads when the foolish try and argue that the concern is not real or will affect them.

whatever category you fit into is completely in your control. Grasshopper, make the right choice. (this reference is probably long before your time)

In a round about way we actually seem to agree.
Young Grasshopper......a young David Caradine....hows that grab
ya................1978HJ45

LOL!!
now that is funny, most kids don't get it.

and yah, we do agree coming from opposite ends of the rainbow...

At age 52 its been a long time since I've been called a kid and I watched "Kung Fu" when it first aired whatever year that was.
If my LJ78 explodes I will probably keep it a secret so I do not have to hear you say I told you so........150,000kms and so far so good. Take care.........1978HJ45

young whipper snappers...
nah, i don't need to rub salt in the wound.

like i keep saying, i love the 78, i just hate the engine...

You have both missed one group. The guys that imported these trucks before the dreaded head syndrome came into the light. When mine was in my drive way crushers was posting what a wonder truck it was on his first run.
111,526 kms and still on the original head:)
I know hard to believe but so true.
Wish me luck I'll need it:rolleyes:

it is a wonderful truck... with a time bomb under the hood.

to be honest, i hope your engine goes 400K with no issues at all. i wish they all would.

You guys (Canadian) have one distinct advantage over me in that you reside in a country where the parts are plentiful. If my engine goes "poof" I will face a sizeable challenge finding parts to repair the existing engine or worse trying to find a replacement engine. My "old man" driving habits will hopefully extent the longevity of the 2L-TE. Take Care.............1978HJ45

of course you could start searching for a PZ or HZ to replace it or a 22R gasser and be ready IF it dies...

just saying..

The other option, perhaps not for our friends in the US, is to get a 94+ model year with a the KZ-TE engine. I imported a couple for myself and a friend and things have been good so far. 140K+ on mine and it's purring quite nice! Only problem is with the hub locks....

Crushers - it was my buddy that was calling you about the OEM winch and bumper for the LJ78 - I've got them sitting in my workshop waiting to be installed. Can you PM me with your location, I wouldn't mind coming to see you some time, if you don't mind. If not to get some work done, then at least to spend some time with an LC 'Master'.

visitors always welcome (as long as i am home, best to call a couple days in advance)

I appreciate the information on potential replacement engines even though I truly hope I do not need one. Fortunately the LJ78 is not my daily driver and while loosing it for a while would be unfortunate and of course expensive it would not force me to walk. I run all my Cruisers on bio-diesel so considering a gas engine as a replacement would not be an option for me. My current fuel cost is approximately .24 cent per gallon so for obvious reasons I need a diesel Cruiser.
Thanks..............1978HJ45
