Hello all lj78 owners,

I finally got some gauges installed, temp/boost/egt. I installed the egt probe pre-turbo and wanted to see what people are getting and what is a 'safe' range to run.

I have a mbc as well to be installed next, but wanted a baseline first. Water temp looks to be running in the 200 range with my 88c t-stat, but need more seat time to get all the variables.

Thanks for feedback.

Ok - got some seat time today and some numbers.

City: cruising 1-4psi / 900egt / 198 to 206 water temp
Off the lights with some gusto (lol) 9psi / 1100 to 1200 egt / water 200

Highway- mild grade and bit of headwind. 2800rpm constant / 8psi / 1150 egt / temp 200
Steep grade, again 2800 rpm constant / 9 psi / 1250 egt / temp 200

Again, egt are pre turbo which will make it different than post. What everyone else gettin? Thanks

Before all the work I did I would peak at 1150 POST turbo worst case. Sorry don't have any pre-turbo data. I think if you do a search there are LJ78 members who did put up pre-turbo readings in years past.

thought I would include an install pic. The needle shows egt and digitally is boost and temp.

Nice gauge, and nice install!!

Love the color of your cruiser too. You got more pics somewhere?

Snow truck.webp

Just did a 5 hour road trip with 5 adults through the "Super Bowl" storm in NY state and Ontario. Truck very solid and with the addition of the manual boost controller (now 12psi max) my egts never went above 1100 and the temp stayed 200-205. Think I will switch back to the 82c stat in spring. Was a great trip and everyone was very happy to be in the landcruiser as we passed several pick ups and one transport in the ditch. The Avalance Extreme snow tires just paid for themselves.

Sounds like it's running really well! Love that pic. A cruiser in it's element. What size tires are those?

265/75/16. - looking for a second set of rims for some summer skinnies which will be 235/85/16" which will look a lot diff, but probably help with the fuel mileage.

PM'ed you regarding rims/tires with a couple recommendations.

What sort of fuel mileage are you getting? I get 11.5l/100km highway (driving 110km/hr fully loaded), and I get 15l/100km in short trip cold engine aggressive city driving. Mixed driving is about 12.5l/100km.

hi , I don't know what kind of motor has your Toyota , but can tell my EGT,
I have a HD-T on a HZJ 78 , tires 265/75/16.
when running at 110-120 km/h ,on flat surface , my egg are 270-300 C.
in acceleration after a pay toll, I can reach 400 C
only if I push really hard on a steep hill , I reach 500-550 C.
EGT probe is after the turbo.
we checked also installing it pre -and post , the difference is maybe 50 C , when get temp are low .
when you are at 500 © there is no difference , as the turbo is acting like a heat sink .

just my 2 pennies.

bye Renago

I've got a 2LT-E LJ78 Pre-turbo egt, all temps in celcius. Very little mods so far, the egr "fell off" when i was installing the egt and most of my services are up to date. But i am having some intermittent issues with the AT lockup.

Cruising: 400 ish, will get up to 500 up hills.
Highway mild grade 100k/hr: 550 degrees

It looks like it will keep climbing up slowly but i'm yet to give it a long enough run to test that theory out.
