here's what i have going on, i have the initial 10.7 volts when i turn the key on, then i can hear the relay switch, then i have nothing. very smokey start for about 20 or 30 seconds and then starts to idle, with the occasional miss or stumble for a minute or so then smooth idle. i can also hear the relay click to shut off the 6v glow after a minute or 2 of idle. so i think it is the resistor that is shot. any ideas if some other one will fit, i don't to pay 250 bucks for one. if i go for the wilson switch do i need to use different plugs, that are only 10.7 volt or will it burn them out on the 6v cycle.:bang:
i found a 3b with tranny , transfer case , rad, wiring harness etc. has anyone put one of these into an lj78. what could i expect to find myself getting into if i were to try this swap. would need clutch pedal etc, what about hooking everything up electrical, without the ecu, lights ,guages etc. any feedback would be appreciated, before i buy it.

I stuck a hz into mine, there wasn't a issue about the truck/ecu etc not having all that electricle stuff plugged in. I only ended using about a 1/3 of the wires that were required for the 2LTE.

Sorry no help with the glow issue, I've gone "wilson" and I ain't turning back.

how long did it take to figure out the wiring. pretty straight forward or not? im not to bad with mechanical , but electrical is not my thing. how did you wilson? stock glow plugs? how did you wire it? thanks

jason

The wiring was straight forward, I needed 12v to my IP solinoid to make her run along with alternator etc.. I found my reverse/neutral start and 4x4 in my harness (2LTE auto) by going through the motions and testing the to see which pair of wires became closed (connected) when in that position. Same went for the R151 (hz's 5 spd), then put 2 and 2 together.

The 2LTE has a super glow system AFAIK, as you mentioned with the initial 10.7v then to 6v. I am using the plugs that came with my hz , I'm not sure what voltage they are as I havn't pulled one to see. I used one heavier gauge wire (8-10 gauge which is already in the truck) which runs from battery the solinoid (black with round top ) more or less, then to the glow plug bar, then 12v from key in the on position to "wilson" then to solinoid to ground. I found the 12v than runs the solinoid attached to the ECU, I poped it out and attached it the 12v after the "wilson" , then it went to the solinoid. Sorry if this sounds a bit confusing but the idea is simple, I just used the existing wiring as much as I could.

where did you find the hz? how much$$$

I found the hz on Kijiji Edmonton, I picked up the entire 2001 hzj79 for 3 Grand . I did have to use a HD front clip with this engine, as I needed the larger engine bay.

Myself as well as "Crushers " has gone down this route, me with the hz and Crushers with a Pz.

i have done the PZ into the LJ78 and you NEED 5th gear. those 4.90 are a bitch on the highway.
there is a complete write up here on mud.
the 3B will be fine for power but you MIGHT need the HD70 front clip since it is a realitivly tall engine.

if i was doing it again i might source a set of 4.11s for in the diffs.

wilson all the way, i have done this on a number of cruisers and never had an issue. take a glow plug out and put it carefully in a vice pressing on the 6 sided section. apply 12V power adn see how long it takes to get red, that is your glow time.
what i like about the wilson over the super glow is the ability to reactivate while the engine is running, very nice on a cold day.

i thought maybe a 2 inch body lift would allow for the taller engine?? 4.90 are not low enough for the 3b, would you need to change rearends, or just gears? what would gears be worth. did you put different glows in , or the 2 stage are fine. thanks for the info

you can run 34" skinny on a LJ78/71 with no lift at all... (i am thinking of uping to a 35" boot for the winter on my PZJ78 but it already has a 2.5" lift)
4.90 is plenty low for the 3B, actually too low. since it was a passing thought i never looked into it much but the center unit from an 80 front and a mini truck rear should work well.
i wouldn't replace the glows till i needed to but i would find out how long to hold them so as not to burn them out.
