I bought a RHD Deisel Land Cruiser Prado LJ78 with a 2L TE engine for mail delivery in New Brunswick. The previous owner had problems with the Head and had the engine cored and rebuilt with new pistons, new water pump, etc.

The engine ran good till on day a belt boke, I pulled it to the side and had it towed back to town. A week after the belts where replaced the engine started to make noise and I brought it to a truck mechanic. It sounds like there are rebars going up and down. Does anyone know what could be causing this.

The only diesel mech in the area is looking at it but he has to fit it in between servicing NB Power service trucks and dump trucks. The vehicle came with a Toyota engine manual for the 2L TE but it covers every model in the 70 series except for the LJ78.

Sorry to hear you and your new diesel have got off to a bad start.
Have you checked the crank pulley is on tight? Its really hard to say, normally a broken belt is not a problem.
Does the engine run or just turn over on the starter?
A 2LTE manual is good for all 2LTEs,I cant see it making any differnce if it does not mention an LJ78.
Thats a prized manual,I dont know how many I have seen on the net looking for one.
I take it you are in Canada, maybe someone can find a mechanic more experienced with Toyota diesels.

Be warned, this engine does not have many friends here

Sorry to hear about your problems...

Was it your timing belt that broke?

If so, then the impact of the pistons hitting the head and valves can cause the crank and/or rod bearings to be damaged and subsequently fail.

Your mechanic should be able to diagnose a bottom end failure quite quickly.

If the engine bearings have failed or are making noise DO NOT start, run, or drive the vehicle until the problem is repaired of you will do (even more) serious damage to the engine.

ummm, i do beleive you emailed me about buying one of these POS. too bad you didn't listen.

even if you do get the vehicle running again you will be looking at a new head in the near future.

i really don't understand it, someone asks for advice, you give it and they ignore it and then have issues.

sorry to hear about your issues. if you need parts i have a complete engine sitting here.

It was one of the drive belts.

Rollingdam, New Brunswick, Canada

There is a timing belt, and then there are accessory belts... they all "drive" something. Can you please be a little more clear about which belt in particular failed?

The only belt that will cause you massive grief is the timing belt, unless the water pump belt broke and you ignored the temperature gauge.

More info please.

Drive belts. The "s" should say it all. I've been calling them (accessory) drive belts for thirty years and the mechanic beside me for fifty. Post a video on you tube ect with sound and send us a link. Like Radd Cruisers said if it is a drive belt not a timing belt , it shouldn't be that big of a problem.

When the belt broke the "T-Belt" light went on the dash. Does this refer to the Timing Belt or Belt Tension?

It was one of the drive belts that broke I don't know which, I could probably find out. He had to remove the radiator to get at the belts and replaced the others while he was at it.

The timing belt light comes on during the bulb check - before starting, and after the engine stops (if the ignition is on).

The T belt light otherwise comes on at 100K km intervals as dictated by the odometer.

Radiator removal is only needed with the timing belt change, but even that can be avoided in most cases.

Is the vehicle running again? An accessory belt would be about $20 or so, plus the time to change it. A broken timing belt can run into the $1000s (like $4000+ if the head is junk).

More info please...
