Hi all, my transfer box needs rebuild and I found that kit Transfer Case Rebuild Kit suits Landcruiser 10/85-99 - 60 70 75 Series Bearings | eBay

Will that fit my vehicle? I read somewhere on this forum that 70 series prados share the same transfer box as the hd versions.. Thanks for any help!

The 70 series prados definitely have a split transfer case the same as the heavy duty models. However it's possible Toyota put different gears or input shafts in etc. Before buying a rebuild kit, maybe check the part drawings for differences between the two. If you go to the Megazip website, you can find the part drawings/numbers for a couple different models (LJ78 vs HZJ77 for example) and compare them to make sure the bearings etc. are the same.

Thanks for your reply! I went to that site and compared transfer gear drawings of LJ77, Hzj77, Hj70 and Bj70. All part numbers are exactly the same. I am going to order the rebuild kit with idler shaft diameter of 38mm, being an early 1990 vehicle.

Thanks for looking into that! Nice to know it is exactly the same as the HD model t-case. The 'light duty' 70 series isn't ALL light duty....LOL.

Haha my thoughts exactly! I have zero experience with any kind of gear work, I hope it's not as hard as it looks.

Pro tip: Superglue the layshaft thrust washer in place when you re-assemble if doing it under the truck.

Especially If you have a hoist & a transmission jack, IMHO it is easier to just pull the transfer & gearbox as a unit, then work on it. You have to almost entirely disassemble the transfer to get it off/on the gearbox, this is much easier to do with it standing on end than under the vehicle. Plus when you have disconnected everything from around the transfer, you are 95% of the way to having the gearbox out anyway.

Cheers
Clint

I think all the LD have the extra low ratio t/case like the 75 series ect.

There are a bunch of youtube videos out there on landcruiser split case rebuilds. Might be worth watching before tearing into yours. You might need to buy some tools you don't have.....

Yeah I've ordered a pair of lock ring pliers and a bearing puller, everything else I saw on rebuild videos I got. I thought that might be easier removing the whole gearbox/split case together, I'm definitely honna need some help now lol

I’m about to put my transfer case in my LJ78 back together, I’ll take some good photos and do a write up for you. You might want to pick up a really small torque wrench that reads down to a single newton meter to set the bearing preload on the output shaft.

That would be wicked mate really appreciate it! I'll look for one now that you mentioned it! Did you use a specific rebuild kit or you got oem parts? I'm currently looking at terrain tamer TK10 kit.

I actually didn't do a full rebuild, mine only had 112k kms on it but had gotten a bit of moisture in the output shaft bearings so they were pitted. I tore mine down and bought just the bearings, seals and gaskets I needed from partsouq.com.

Not bad at all, might go that route as well. How much did it all cost if you don't mind asking?

I'll have to look back through the orders and add it up, I was buying parts for the transmission at the same time.

Don't bother, I'll find the part numbers from megazip, I'll be replacing seals, gaskets and all bearings. Thanks for all the help!

The only 2 different parts to the HD models are the transfer input shaft and sleeve yoke, since the LJ77 runs a G52 box (right ?).

I was under the impression that the LJ77 was 2LT/R150f, and the LJ79 was 3L/G52
