I am looking at a lj70. It is said to have been stored for 4 years. As it is now it runs fine but does put out a decent amount of smoke, not an obscene amount but more than it should under normal circumstances. I don't think the fuel has been freshened.
How much should I be concerned?
If there is a problem is it likely to be the head gasket or rings or...?
It is unknown whether the head gasket has ever been changed. 300000 km on the engine.

At 300,000km the head has definitely been changed at least once and maybe twice. Anytime anyone considers buying one of these vehicles, I recommend they budget for some major engine maintenance or an engine swap. With no maintenance records, you have to assume the worst. You could end up having to rebuild the IP, injectors, turbo, put on an new cylinder head etc. Or do an engine swap.

If you know a competent diesel mechanic, you could have them check blow-by, check compression etc. When you say it smokes, when does it smoke and what color is the smoke? Is the smoke just on initial warm-up, or while driving. Is it diesel smoke, oil smoke, coolant smoke? Lots of questions.....

Its all about the colour of the smoke, when it smokes and the duration. You will could be up for a new engine within 12 months if there is a mis diagnosis.
