Hi!
My Toyota doesn't shift into OD sometimes and for the first few minutes seems to not shift into 1st gear and it accelerate very slow. Any Ideas?
Another thing is, always when I start cold engine, it smokes really terrible. Gets much better after 2 minutes. Might the glow plugs be in bad condition?
Thanks!

Throttle position sensor needs to be checked. Kickdown cable needs to be checked. Also check your trans fluid level.

Smoke: check your glow plugs and wiring. Also, check for a head leak - you will find bubbling coming into the cooling system if the head is cracked.

Thanks, the head was changed, car is running smooth, just the smoke for the first minute or two...
The OD light is flashing time to time too. Sometimes for longer period without change. Fluid was changed twice just through the lower plug.

curious, before the first tranny oil change, did the fluid smell "burnt" or did it look black?

smoke on warm up

My LJ78 will also smoke badly on start-up and if run cold downhill can (sometimes) smoke very badly; pretty much light greay/white smoke with diesel smell indicating incomplete combustion. After I checked all possible causes; verify glow plugs are fine, check compression, installed wilson swithch, etc, I believe it's just when the engine doesn't get warm enough and you have incomplete combustion. With the wilson switch installed, i now make sure I glow for at least 15 seconds before firing, then give it another 5 to 10 seconds in the winter depending on temperature. that gets the cylinders up to a temperature where they are all firing. If it's cold I will turn the hand throttle up so it runs around 1,000 rpm and that seems to get all cylinders fully combusting, not much smoke.

Which head gasket did you use when you put your head on?

Have you set and checked the valves?

I'm still trying to chase this smoking problem down on some LJ78s. In many ways I wish that engine had never been built, it's such a piece of crap.

So I already red the flashing OD, which gave me code- solenoid no 2 problem. Is it possible to repair solenoids? I know it depends on... New one will be for sure expensive?
thx

does anybody know, where the solenoids are? I believe under the transmission cover (pan).
do you also know, what type of transmission is used in Prados 1990?
is it A343F or A440F.
thanks!

Does anybody know, which one is the no.2 solenoid?
is the picture below correct? the black one is NO 2?
thanks
