Ordered front axle rebuild kit from Onur Tuesday. Should be in by this weekend. Im headed to a friends in Helena(old cahaba) to rebuild on sat or/and sunday. Anyone bored is welcome to come by. Would love to meet ya and im sure there will be free beer around. couple questions:

How long should this take 2 people that have car knowledge but never done this before. Can it be done in a day?
All tools from right up we have except hubnut. ill grab one this week. Anyone that has done this have any tips other than the write up that i will have with me?

Im sure ill have more questions but write up is pretty detailed.

I hope you have a friend with that hubwrench if you didn't order one with your kit. Ya can't just walk into AZone and find one. Erik (LandSpeeder) told me for a long time "it aint hard, it's just messy" and now I know what he meant. Plan on about two days morning to night, and the weatherman is calling for rain on Sunday. Most of the time is spent cleaning parts, so get a five gallon bucket and three gallons of diesel to clean parts in and soak the birfs until the old grease breaks up. When you think you have enough shop rags, buy some more. Same for brake cleaner.
If you are going to be working in old Cahaba, maybe I will be able to stop in to point and grin for a while.

Guess ill search for one around napa or hope I can find one somewhere , because I did not order one..... :censor: . First entrance from Bessemer first left. 3 or 4 houses down on left. Welcome to come by. Will be in garage with it open. Hopefully rain won't be an issue.

If you don't have the 54mm wrench, best to not even get started. You will need the wrench 20 minutes into the job.

You don't have enough paper towels, or brake cleaner, or carb cleaner. I don't know how much you've bought but it's not enough.

Brass punch to loosen the cone washers. I leave the nut on so that when the cone washer releases it will not go flying off the stud.

To clean parts I use an old 5 gallon bucket and a couple of gallons of gas. Whatever you use wear good gloves. I have a small stock of military surplus chemical resistant gloves for this but even so the constant contact with fuel will wipe out a pair.

Gimme an address. I'll bring my 80-series disassembly case, pelican case with anything needed for the 80.
With someone on each side and someone pointing and laughing, it can be done in a day. You'll need a firehouse subs pickle bucket for each side.
Do you have a floor jack? Jack stands?

Purple power instead of gas for parts, it's easier on your hands since you will abandon the gloves 30 minutes in when the third one breaks.
If you're planning on never wheeling hard, no point in swapping the birfs out. It saves a lot of time to not have to swap the axle shafts on the birfs. Are they clicking?
There's a LOT of corners that can be cut. It can be done in a day. I've done one in hours.... Cause I HAD to.
Are you replacing the inner axle seals? The spindle bushing?

Thank you all for the input. It's getting moved to Sunday morning. Cleaning garage tomorrow apparently so we will have space to work. I can get address if you can help sunday. I have 6 cans of brake cleaner and 5 rolls of paper towels. I'll go get more ha . They are clicking yes. I dont wheel hard. Just hunting trips and fun toy. I wouldnt mind wheeling it. Just have to get some of this done first. I also don't want to do this all over again cause i missed something. We have jack stands. I ordered a rebuild kit from beno. So im replacing all that came in that kit. I've never touched an axle. But I learn fast. My buddy has an old scrambler he has done axle stuff on numerous times. I'd love your help advise and company. I'm new to this thing. And trying to learn as much as I can.

Ouch. So birfs will be changed. That'll be an extra 30 to hour added. It ain't easy getting those things off and on. Zip ties and prayers will do it though!
I can help Sunday too, but DANG! I've never met a person who's never jumped into one of these axles and sure they can get it done in a day... You're brave.
I'll holler atchu

Also. Bring cardboard boxes, that's the best thing to lay down as to not get oil and grease EVERYWHERE. Cause no matter how clean you think you can be... you won't be.

Plus if you are at the met a lot we should grab lunch or something one day. I work on stadium trace. Haha gotta just jump in. No other way. I've been saving some card board. Was planning on going by Wally word or the Dixie to see what's out back

I stay out there as much as possible. go home for lunch too, so I drive 150 four times a day easily.
let's do it!

I also got a tie-rod puller. While it's not necessary to pull the rods off the knuckle arms... it's a WHOLE lot easier to get them back in when not connected to a 4foot rod.

Sounds great! Cruiser need some work. But man I love it. I'll say it numerous times but thank you !

All done and home safe! Thank you E for all your help. Too bad you couldn't just point and laugh! Thank you again for everything. I have your firehouse bucket and sweatshirt. I'll swing it by this week. Black dog was great to meet you. Just the beginning of the addiction. I cannot express the appreciation.

For anyone keeping score, this is the oldest 80 in the US!
Frame stamp 1003!
2/90 date!

Your welcome BTW!
Like I said, you couldn't pay me $500 to do that job unless the owner was in there doing it, then I'd help for free!

Yup, it's old ha . Man it drives so much better. Thanks for everyone's help. I would love repay the favor if anyone needs anything just yell.

When we gone do the belts? It shouldn't take 15 minutes.
But now you know what to do to loosen the pulley, it should be a SNAP!

It was a snap ha. i did them last night finishing up the beers. tightened right up just like ya said. and no more wobble ha.

Sweet JEEBUS!
I bet it does drive better!
