Hey don't blame me....I don't own a Hummer or an Escalade and both of my Cruisers run on home made bio-diesel.

wasn't blaming you....just our damn gubbermints

i don't use the zip ties but when i still lived in Calgary i would take 2 pieces of cardboard full height of the rad, no bigger than just over 1/2 width. then, as the day dictated, i would slide the one over the other for controlled resistance.
worked very well where the temps can change 15 degrees in a matter of hours.

also, MAKE DAMN SURE you watch the temp gauge cause if it starts to move up ... do something about it ... NOW!!

cracked heads, blown hoses, busted rads are no fun to fix in the winter on the side of the road when the wife is giving you the "I'm not happy" look.

In my never-ending quest to lower my mileage even further I was wondering about retrofitting a viscous heater like they use in the cold-packaged HDJ100s. I think it might even be the same Denso unit that they use in the CRD Jeep. It would be nice to have something to heat the coolant faster when it is really cold (IE colder than -20C). I suppose I could just move the Webasto over from my 74 but it hardly uses any fuel at all.

I've only had my rig for a couple weeks, and with diesel I get about 15L/100 km - I'm hoping thats the winter additives. But when I run it on vegetable oil, thats right folks, veggie oil, I ge t 160 km to about 10-13 L. Now I'm guessing here. My veg oil tank in the back only holds 45L but isn't calibrated, and I've driven out to spruce grove and back (80 km) twice now, and it looks like i've only used 10L or so. Perfect for a starving student like myself.

Oh and ps, I get veggie oil for free, or I buy it from a pal in Edmonton for 50 cents/L. :)

Love live veggie oil burners!!

A word to the wise....treat the guys that provide you the oil very nicely. As diesel prices go up the oil recycling companies are getting more and more aggressive and individuals like you and I are getting pushed aside. The restaurants that I get my oil from are being approached constantly and if it were not for my friendship with the owners my supply would be gone.

retrofitting a viscous heater like they use in the cold-packaged HDJ100s. . . . . . More information please...

It is a belt driven device which acts like a torque converter to heat the coolant when it is engaged by it's magnetic clutch. It is plumbed into the heater core lines so the cabin gets the benefit of early heat right after the engine is started. The combination of heat from it and the added load to the engine helps warm the engine up more quickly than normal. Typically an engine computer would control it, having it turn on any time the coolant is below 150F. The Jeep guys who think they are saving the planet by driving a diesel are taking the devices out because they do consume fuel to operate. I'm hoping to find a good takeout on ebay
