I have a 79 fj40 and was pulling a dumpster truck out of a field. I had always thought I had open diffs, but I dug 4 holes about the same size. Does this mean I have limited slip? if so how do you tell if you do. I have no idea what the po did to the truck but it was mostly stock when I got it. Thanks for the info.

the rear diff is open from the factory, to find out for sure ask previous owners/ open the diff. an open diff will spin all 4 tires if all 4 tires have the same ammoung of traction. that would be my guess

lift one axle entirely off the ground....spin one wheel...if the opposite side spins in the opposite direction, it's an open diff. If they spin the same directino/same speed, it's either an LS or a locker....if a locker, spin it fast then stop and the other side should continue to ratchet audibly.

Very likely you just had equal traction at all 4 contact points.
