My brother-in-law has an ’86 4Runner, 22re, 4.11 gears (soon to be 4.88), 4" lift, 32" MT's, and automatic. The runner was originally a turbo, but PO took the turbo off. We know it is not the most powerful truck to drive, but it works well for my brother-in-law, even at Tellico.
To the problem…
When he gets the runner stuck, like in mud or even climbing rocks, he can run the engine up to over 3,000 RPM, and even spin the tires. But if he hooks up to pull someone else who is stuck, he can only get a maximum of 1,200 RPM on the engine once a strain is placed on the strap. It won’t even try to spin the tires, even in light sand or mud. This is the case in both H4 and L4, havn't tried it in 2H. This has happened numerous times.
Normal driving does not show any problem with the tranmission. Tranny fluid level is normal and no smell of it being burnt.
Any ideas as to why this could happen???
