I bought the 4138T566 McMaster Gas springs for my FJ62 based on the FAQ section. They installed easily, but now the liftgate window won't shut. The new shocks bottom out at the hub. I measured and the dimensions are correct...17.13" extended...right at 11" compressed. The window is a good 4" from closing. Did anyone else have this problem? Would it help at all if I flipped them from the way they were originally istalled? So frustrating.

FYI: The shocks are Suspa c16-24197

Thanks for any help.

It's either binding or you measured wrong on the install. I would try flipping them, or removing one at a time, to see if it's a bad one.

I also ordered the ones in the FAQ for my 62 from McMaster. I had the same problem, the body is to long and bottoms out before the hatch closes all the way. I had to send them back and put back on the originals. This was about a year ago and I haven't messed with it since. Someone should update the FAQ.

Do you think the window would open high enough if I installed the 15.24" long? The compression length is also 1" shorter. The one that isn't working is 17.13" long and the original is 16" long.

I replaced mine about 3 months ago... Here is the post if interested in where I sourced the parts from.

Thanks for the posts. I just can't figure out why the exact same lifts would work on some trucks, but not others. I tried with only one attached and it still didn't work. I guess I will just exchange them for the next shortest size and hope it opens enough.

Well that sucks, I just ordered those struts... Go figure..

I'm not at home so I can't check my microfice parts list, but toyodiy lists two different toyota part numbers for the struts, "with rear wiper" and "w/o rear wiper". Maybe there is a part change and toyota used different sizes for different year ranges.

I just added some I bought from Autozone this weekend. They where about $25 a piece. They are just a bit shorter by maybe a quarter inch but they open the hatch plenty high and they come with new ball studs that fit in the factory holes. They are Might Lift #E95784 if you interested.

Jace,

If you put them on, let us know if they fit. I am just going to exchange the 17" ones for the 15" ones. Hopefully it opens all the way up! I'll let you guys know and try to add it to the FAQ. Oh, I bought the 60 # ones and they work great. It goes up nice and smooth and stays up.

Ok, on an '85 FJ60, McMaster-Carr gas shocks (PN 4138T569) 17.13" extended length, 6.3" stroke. They fit fine. The only issue i have with them is that the extended length is a little long, but the rear hatch closes with no problem.

What I think we are looking at here now, is a change between the FJ60 and 62. Toyota pulled a quick one on us lol!

That must be it. The McMaster 17" did not work at all. I exchanged them for the ones a little over 15" and they worked, but not strong enough in the 60# model. Exchanged those for the 90# ones and they work great. About 1" from full door extension, but plenty of room. I'll have to update the FAQ for the FJ62. Oh, mcmaster has great customer service and I had no problem returning the installed shocks I didn't need.
