in the process of lifting a 79 toyota pickup and would like to be able to throw in some 34" swampers (tall slim ones) and ive already installed some 2" shackle lift rear and 1.5" shackle lift in the front. looking to get another 2" for a total fo 4" since thats what ive seen work on other toyotas similiar to mine. i have springs for the front that i am pretty sure will work but the rear however i would like to know what or if anyone else has used springs or addaleafs from other trucks such as some chevy trucks i have heard that some use. any onfo on the front and rear either way is much appreiciated and thanks in advance.

I'm not sure the amount of lift you are considering is going to get the job done without alot of tire rubbing. The firewall behind the front tires will be the biggest challenge (during turning).

I recommend you remove the stock front plastic inner fender liners, then hammer back the firewall directly behind the tire. You can generally pick up another inch of clearance behind the tire. Then get some spray cans of undercoating from your local parts store to conseal your firewall denting carnage!!!

I ran 9.50 x 34 swampers on my old 79 with a add a leaf in the front and dog leg shackles in the rear I did fold the pinch weld on the rear of the front fender wells. The tires barely rubbed when fully stuffed on a tight turn. On the 83 I'm building now, I am going to run a 3 inch lift in the front and add a leeves in the rear, with Q-78 Swampers.

I had a 80 model that I ran 12.50 x 33 Swampers on with no lift. One thing I can say for the 1st Gens, is you can run a pretty good size tire with minumal lift.

OK

The shackles gave me about an 1-1/2"-1-3/4" of lift in the front and 2" in the back so i figured it should work. will see i suppose banging the inner wheel well hopfully isnt too much of a pain. thanks for the info guys.:steer:

The other problem with this much lift on a first gen truck is that the front drive shaft is very short. I have a 1982 Toyota Trekker and I had to swap the trans to a newer one when I went to the 4" lift that I had originally as the drive shaft is about 4-6" longer. The short stock one will bind like a ***** if you are not careful and simple making it loger will not help the front output on the later trannys are further back.

I have the 34" swampers on my '80 right now with no lift and they barely rub at all. Only a little bit on the passenger side. That being said, if I had the money right now I would take advantage of Jim's great deal on some 3" springs and get some bilstiens in the appropriate length.

One thing you should know though, those big lugs suck alot of power! The 34x9.50 come right off the rims without beadlocks below about 15 psi with any off roading. Had to mount mine on some home made beadlocks. You might be better off with some skinny bfg muds in the 33x10.50 size. Swampers do have that animal traction though! :)
