I have a 1980 40 and I am trying to simplify my twice yearly hardtop/tailgate removal and reinstallation. On the '80 each license plate has 2 wires, a power and a ground and they are fed by a single brown power wire and a ground wire that connects to a harness and then to the frame rail.

I put a double female bullet connector on the power wire and connected new power wires to each light. I did the same for the ground - a double female with new ground wires to each light. All lights work until I close the ambulance door. When the door latch touches the striker it shorts out and blows the fuse. The ground to the harness and frame looks good. What am I doing wrong?

The lights must be grounded to the door, and the wires are crossed somewhere in the circit. You need to recheck the wires .
