Venezuelan federal government has recently taken delivery of 600 new troopies and utes. Have never been to Venezuela, but if I could speak the language....

I wonder if you snuck one out of the country if the authorities would notice that there are only 599 left.
Chas - I am less concerned with the authorities there than those closer to home... No shortage of these rigs for sale at very reasonable prices in Belgium, Afghanistan, Gibraltar, etc., just no way to import them legally.

I assume you are referring to those fine folks that reside at Disneyland on the Potomac. Just remember they are here to protect you. : )

If Walt was running things, we would have more/bigger/cooler rides and toys.

Where are the troopies?, I only see 76's :)
Yep, the OP is a Norte Americano idjit. There are so few 70 series up here - even fewer 4 door 70s - that we get all fuzzy-brained when a shiny Cruiser built in this century comes along. Wagons, not troopies, but oh, so sweet.

The government imported troopies, wagons and SWB 70s, all with the 1GR. They also imported a few Hilux's (despite them being manufactured locally, as a silent hit to Toyota), Tundras, Tacomas and even 5th gen 4runners, which werent produced here. I'm betting some government bastard kept a lot of money for himself with these commercial transactions......

To the people who said that maybe they wouldn't notice one missing, there have been cases where the trucks leave port for delivery to a designated area and a bunch of them don't arrive to their destination. Where are they? They shouldn't be hard to find as every newer generation 70s seen belong to the government, but they just turn away and don't pay any attention to such events. Also, none of these vehicles are registrated, because their import wasn't done legally, even while being done by the government itself, so they're driving around without license plates. Even easier to spot, but most of these cases are planned, such is the corruption and decay of the institutions in our country.

Damien, more than just panel damage. A bunch of them have even been burned to the ground in recent protests. Also, the operators of the institutions that receive the vehicles don't treat them kindly, so its common to see a 2010 plus vehicle looking like a 30 year old piece of junk..

One day when things get better I hope they start producing the 70 series, along with a similar lineup as they produced until a couple of years ago, As you, i'd love to get my hands on a GRJ76....

Hi lugueto,

I really feel for you mate, being in Peru I see your stupid president on TV everyday because of some crazy decision or another comically erroneous phrase coming out of his mouth. Its a sad era for the most oil rich nation in Latin America, but after having Chavism infecting every institution in the country, I really believe the current crisis is necessary for real change and I don't think it is far away... just like a junkie, they never get off the drug until they hit rock bottom! Pity it came to that but hang in there buddy!

Looking forward to touring your beautiful country when real democracy returns, just like all your paisanos I know here that fled.

Mate, the latín politicians make even the dodgiest western poli appear like a dove bearing priest to whom you charge with caring for your elderly mother. Most have little to no education whatsoever, are in their solely to start divying up the contracts amongst their mates or family... it's soul destroying! a political corruption scandal that would have a western poli in jail overnight for 10 years happens here every day, so much so that they just blow over in people's minds and not only does nothing happen but they get reelected! In the western world we really are blessed.

Back to troopies... No surprise they are all 1GR (and not diesel that is), pity! But never seen that mix before. So how long will that last in a 78 or 79 carrying it's full payload, do they have much torque?

My mechanic drove one of the GRJ79 troopies and said it was a freaking rocket, I constantly see them carrying 10-12 people and they have no trouble carrying such loads. Gas here is way too cheap to get Diesels. Although i've seen very few D4D hilux's. VERY few, interesting sight, were not used to Diesel Toyotas..

Agreed, the current crisis is completely necessary for change to occur, and it will get even worse before it gets better. We just have to see where this goes as we currently have no clue as to what might happen. Thanks for your sympathy!

Also, what is NHTSA??

In my Country Where I Came From We Have pretty much all the manufacture of the Japanese imports you can think of and when I move in the states and bring tWo of my favorite truck NISSAN PATROL and TOYOTA LANDCRUISER but found out that can't do that due to import regulations and that sucks..

Here in the US it means "National Highway Traffic Safety Administration" but not sure what that has to do with these Cruisers in Venezuela.
Lugueto/Damien -
NHTSA regulations limit what US residents can/cannot import, as enforced by Customs officers at ports/points of entry.

As the OP (idjit), I saw hundreds of 70 series rigs outside of US jurisdiction and posted/started a thread implicitly referring to the role of our federal government (in this case, NHTSA) restricting what we get to drive and enjoy. Guess I could have referenced EPA, Customs, CARB, Congress, (*) etc. but I chose NHTSA.

One of the things I love about MUD is the opportunity to connect to people with shared or related interests around the world. Never been south of Costa Rica, but I have friends from SA and watch the news with great interest. In crafting the original message, I did not consider readers not subject to our rather insane import laws here. Neither did I ponder/comment on what use or conditions the vehicles would be subject to. Thanks for the additional comments and on-scene perspective.

Sorry for the confusion.

(*) Notes:
NHTSA - This agency creates regulations regarding vehicle safety standards (generally) based upon laws passed by US Congress - our legislators decide what is best for us and NHTSA tells us how to behave.
EPA - The Environmental Protection Agency does similar things regarding vehicles - sets standards, creates regs to ensure we don't damage Mother Earth.
Customs - Part of Homeland Security, these are the guys that either let an imported rig into USA or send it back to where it came from.
CARB - California Air Resources Board, the people who enforce local (state) laws regarding licensing and operation of road vehicles. Once we get an imported vehicle past federal barriers, we then have to deal with safety and emission requirements of each state and they are often quite different from one another. CARB just happens to be one of the most difficult.
Congress - Our national legislative body, a lower (House of Representatives) and upper house (Senate). With due respect to earlier comments about SA politicians vs. NA politicians, I must differ. Ours are highly educated (mostly lawyers) with decades of experience extracting funds from both workers/unions and capitalists/business owners. They have well trained staffs dedicated to raising funds and keeping them in positions of power and influence. They steal (raise) more in a week than your guys do in a year. And, its all legal!......sorry for the rant

I usually refer to the US Senate as "the House of Lords" but didn't go there this time...

Thanks for deciphering the acronym for us non-US who couldn't be bothered googling it, but I beg to differ on the EPA, they only protect mother earth on occasions when its not an inconvenience to big business... for example its hard to believe how much of the lower 48's watersheds have been raped by gas fracking which was made exempt from EPA regs by the loving Bush. So you're free to send unknown quantities of untested chemicals designed to disintegrate rock into your drinking water aquifers, but there's a prohibition on importing a vehicle with a proven record on parts longevity and fuel economy compared to the nationally produced gas guzzlers. I have stopped apologizing for rants, even in China everyone's still free to scroll down past paragraphs that look intimidating LOL

Yep, tru dat. As you can see from my sig line, I own two non-US Toyotas and would love to own more. The resurgence in US energy independence - for now - is due in large part to the practices you noted. There's too much money in play for the energy industry and politicians not to go that way. Most voters want paychecks and cheap gas, not durable diesel vehicles that have some style. Also, they cannot justify selling us new trucks if the ones we are driving are still functioning at high levels of reliability and economy, can they? I don't usually talk politics or religion but this IS a tech forum, eh?

Regardless of topic and personal views, we are all in this together. Again, thanks and cheers!
