My GE washer and dryer are finally taking a crap after 20 years of use, so I am shopping for new. I looked at LG front loader washers and dryers at home depot tonight. We have been using a top loader washer for the last 20 years. I understand the water and energy savings potential of the new designs. I am curious about the reliability and durability of this equipment.

If you have an opinion, I'd like to hear it.

Thanks, Tom

We have a front load LG washer that is 4 years old. So far its been trouble free. Only issue we've had is mold smell if the door isnt left open long enough running a load thru. Wasnt a problem in our first 2 houses with it as there was the room to keep it open all the time. In the current house we cant do that.

We also have the matching dryer with no issues. Both are top of the line(4 years ago) and have been excellent buys so far.

actually there is no water or energy savings of front loads to the new style top loaders these days, they are all on a pretty even keel. having said that my LG laundry pair has been trouble free and supposedly the most trouble free brand for several years running according to consumer reports.

The only complaint I have with the LG front load washer is it doesn't seem to clean as well as my parents top load machine.

I "think" I am getting cleaner clothes from our Whirlpool and an older Miele front loader than the former top loader I used to use exclusively. BUT I can say for sure that the clothes are lasting longer when washed in the front loaders. My shirts were pretty much rags after about a year when washing in the old GE top loader ... now I don't see any appreciable wear after the same period in the front loaders. I hang shirts to dry btw as the dryer shrinks the hell out of them.

I have had my LG front loader washer and gas dryer (from Best Buy) for ~8 yrs. Both have worked perfectly except for when a play coin my son left in his pocket somehow got wedged in the pump impeller. $40 for a new one and it is back to normal. With 2 kids, 2 labs that shed like mofos, and my dirty wrenching clothes we have thoughly abused/overloaded them. Just have to clean the filter on the washer every so often. Just this year I finally took the housing off the dryer to vac out all the lint/dust/dog hair that had accumulated since I was also cleaning the ducts.

We have had one for several years with no problems.

A little boonie fab but what I did was bend a hook up out of ABS plastic rod and use a magnet around the side. This keeps the door open slightly and allows the washer to dry out. No smell problems.

I had the LG and the smell got so bad that washing the machine before washing a load of laundry was the standard. Then my wife went out a bought a top loader sold the LG on craigslist. Never did think about leaving it open.

using an Afresh tablet every now and then helps as well. It sanitizes the washer. That being said, I always leave the door open until it is dry inside.

I think doing whites last with a little bleach should take care of most of the mildew issues. FWIW I have a Frigidaire front loader set that was a scratch and dent pair we bought a while ago. We leave the washing machine door open when not in use too, although I've never noticed smell. I have a full LG kitchen appliance set. The dishwasher sucks balls, but LG ended up repairing about a dozen times, testing our water, replacing it twice, couldn't make it work well, and then bought it back from us for full price. I can't complain at all about their service. It was excellent. The DW was crap, but they handled it as well as they could have. When they bought it back they said, just keep the one you have. We don't want it back. So now I have a free poor cleaning expensive stainless dishwasher. Replaced with a Bosch because they look really similar. I think I might throw it in the bar downstairs whenever I get around to actually finishing the cabinets for it. The other LG stuff has been great.

Thanks for all the input. Went out this morning and bought a new set of Speed Queen top loader washer/dryer. Commercial quality and made in America.....
