Yes but no. They cluster mileage and the ECU mileage must match or the odometer will throw a fault code, this is a anti theft/odometer roll back feature.

Your dealer can match them, but you will need verification of the miles and they are going to charge you minimum one hour labor to do this.
A lot of work and money for looks.

I don't think there is any mileage info stored in the ecu. I have been changing between two ecus on my 98 lx and have no codes. The mileage info is stored on an eeprom in the cluster. It is very easy to change if you can follow internet directions.

Maybe not the ecu, but there is another odometer stored somewhere not in the cluster. The cluster stores it as well as the truck. They must match. Usually, meaning on most cars, if they do not match the odometer shows the vehicle mileage but flashes, like the clock on your stove after the power goes out, it keeps time but flashes. This is to warn that the miles have been tampered with.

This is 100% not correct. The mileage is only in the garage cluster. Mine was swapped, before I bought it, and the ECU doesn't care one bit.

I guess Toyota doesn't care about odometer roll back and vehicle theft then?

This is the first I have ever heard of a digital odometer not having to match the vehicle.

And you know for 100% that the dealer didn't match the truck and the cluster?

Absolutely 100% without any doubt. Truck has about 250k, per Toyota records. Odo reads 130k. There is no track of mileage in the ECU. I know for a fact that roll back fraud is easy in a 100.

Wow. Ok. Good to know.

To the OP, go for it then.

The correct answer to the original question (way up there!) is "sort of".

There are some caveats:

  • The cluster must be from the similar "wiring year". The models of J100 were split around 08/2002, I'm not sure which year the LX470 change. The later models use CAN, while the earlier model everything is wired individually (if both cars had a 4 speed auto, then the clusters should match ok)
  • The illumination for the cluster is weird differently between the styles of clusters, so that may not work.
  • You mentioned an FJ (assuming an FZJ100 which has the 4.5L 6 cylinder petrol engine) - the tacho may read differently (it definitely would when swapping between a diesel and petrol)
  • If your car has a sub-tank, this indicator may no longer work (some models of the cluster from Japan honor the sub-tank switch but do not have a "sub" indicator to let you know which tank is active; I'm seen LX470 clusters that do not honor the sub-tank switch)
