Leveling my engine conversion FJ80

Marks and Advance

I'll have to go with a big ol' definitive "maybe" on that one. The last I knew, Advance was sourcing all their Land Cruiser adapters from Mark's. The Advance listing does seem to indicate that the model run (dates) are consistent with a US-spec FJ62 and should match up. HOWEVER, I've had terrible experiences with Advance and the quality of information they provide- (I'll almost guarantee that if you call Advance today that they'll not sell you the 50-0408A for the price listed there. ) so wouldn't bank on the info they have on the site either.

If you can confirm that you've got the 19-spline split-case T/C we can call both Mark's and Advance to compare. I'll send Denny a note this AM, just to ask her. My bet is that her MFK545/546 series hits it (assuming you have the 19-spline case) and that her website just needs a clarification.

In the meantime, it might we worth a call to Advance to ask 'price and availability' on their 50-0408A, but I doubt that the answers are "on the shelf" and "$793.50". But, you'll probably want to identify your exact transfer case as a starting point.

Best regards,
TT

Thanks for looking that up. I think the transfer case is different between the fj62 and the fj80's. My transfer case is not full time 4X4. And I don't know why I didn't think to pose the question over in the 60's forum. I think that transmission is also run on a V8, and I'm sure there is some experience with that. I also found this on the Advance Adapters website that appears to be the correct one.

Late Model 4L60E to Land Cruiser 19 Spline Split Transfer Case Adapter | Engine & Transmission Conversion Adapters - Advance Adapters

Does that look like it has all the pieces and parts? It also says that it requires the two wheel drive transmission. I didn't know that H3's came in two wheel drive!

Thanks for posting up your conversion. I think I may be moving this to the top of the list.

I just lobbed a message to Mark's so will let you know what they say.

The preference for the 2WD 4L60 transmission is just that the output shaft is longer and with the 2WD tail housing it's a direct mate-up to the adapter kit (we had to swap output shafts on my 4WD 4L60). For that reason I think the best donor vehicle configuration to do the swap from is probably a 2WD Trailblazer or Envoy-- that also gets you the I-6 Atlas with 270HP.

If that Advance kit price and description is right (I think they'll quote you a higher price when you call, though), it should contain all the needed pieces. I believe it's the Mark's kit re-packaged and the Mark's kits we've bought have been very complete and well-documented.

Best regards,
TT

Fwiw, i have used th. AA kit on a few conversions. The kit retails at just over $700; I sell them for less than that. AA uses their own castings and other components for their kit.

All fj62s had a 19 spline split case. There are a few differences like the bearing ( not bushings ) supported high and low speed output gears, different electrical switches and slightly differently shaped input gear ( spline seal ) as well as the obvious; vacuum shift pod. However, the same adapter can be used for all split cases; 34 mm, 38mm and fj62.

Yep, I got a reply back from Advanced Adapters. I have copied it below. When/if I do this, I'll get mine from Georg.

I think this would be cool swap. I'm not sure if you would have pan
clearance at the front of the engine for the differential. You are
correct ,we can adapt the transmission to the t/case no problem, though.
I would take some measurements so see if you will have enough clearance.
Thanks for the inquiry, Matthew.

Quick Bump on this thread-- I heard back from Denny at Mark's tonight. Excerpted here:

>>
"The kit required will be the MFK917E or MFK917E6 (depending on the auto being 4 or 6 bolt rear) as per the info on the link below

GM Auto all models

Scroll down the page until you come to the TH700/4L60E section

Advance may have one in stock."

She mentioned Steve at Advance as the contact. Steve and I do NOT get along, based on our previous interactions, but YMMV.

At minimum this would confirm that you want the MFK917.

Did you decide which way you wanted to go on it?

I'm leaning this direction. I want to go for a ride in a Trailblazer to get a feel for how the engine performs in a comparable weight rig before I make a final decision between the I6 or a V8. Thank you for confirming the adapter. If I do it, I will bypass Advance Adapters and get the stuff from Georg at Valley Hybrids. I may even have him do the swap when the time comes. Thanks again for your help, and for posting your experience.

Oh, i have a feeling that you'll like the Trailblazer performance. But just to be fair, could you throw 1,500#s of sand bags throughout the vehicle before going for a ride to get a real world experience? :-)

IIRC, with the 4.2 Atlas installed in the FJ62, the actual curb weight should be within 100# +/- of what the TB/4.2 weighs, so it's not really too bad a comparison for relative performance. References show TB coming in about 4350#. Replacing the 3F-E with the 4.2 takes a LOT of weight off the FJ62.

A 62 with the Atlas engine? I think I missed a thread somewhere...

I have a Toyota land cruiser fj 80. I want to swap the engine with ford's new 3.5 diesel ecoboost engine. My problem is that the ford's transfer case is on the driver (left) side while my Toyota's 3rd member is on the passenger (right) side. How do I move the transfer case from left to right to match the Toyota's 3rd member? I also would like to know if there's a manual transmission that will match this engine with it's transfer case on the passenger (right) side. Any help will be much appreciated.

Wasn't aware that Ecoboost was a diesel. To our knowledge the EcoBoost Ford is using in the F-150 is a 3.5L running direct-injection gas engine. It's numbers are nice, but I would think there are a lot of easier ways to get to those power levels with Toyota or other I-6 engines.

Can you please send a link on the diesel version you'd referenced?

Thanks,
TT
