lets beat it to death again - Shocks

After looking at more threads, I see that I can get Toyota OEM shocks for about $21 each. Will I see 3.5x a better ride with the billies at $75 each? Again, no off-road. Daily Driver, in town, a little highway.

Its not a $ question for me. At first I was going to get the Bilstein 5100s, but then realized they will give me an inch or two of lift. Riding higher is not an issue for me - I just sold my 3500 Duramax Crew Cab. But I don't need it on the 62. That sent me to the 4600's. If there is a more comfortable shock for essentially street only use, I'm all ears.

Ok, so, to the people who got Tough Dog shocks without the rest of a kit, what did you pay for them? Are they considerably less than the ~$100 per shock for OMEs?

shocks shouldnt give you lift. that’s the job of springs and shackles. you may not have enough travel in your suspension to match a shock but it won’t lift a vehicle

This is where I got the impression that it would give me some lift:

Those are what I would describe as universal aftermarket shocks. Their note about lift means they think they’d fit with 3-4” of suspension lift (typically via non stock springs.) They are longer than stock, both when extended and when compressed. If you installed them with original leaf springs, the shock would most likely bottom out (reach its minimum length) prior to the spring being able to do its job and compress fully, which will result in a horrible ride and ruined shocks in short order.

With a modified vehicle and mix and match suspension components you really have to just take the shocks off, twist up the suspension to it’s limits and take measurements for the shocks.

I’d be very cautious of taking the word of online warehouses that most likely don’t actually know anything about these trucks or probably even their own products. Those shocks are also listed as having eye style mounts on both ends, which is incorrect for the stock mounting points on a 60 series (they are stud mount on top, and an eye on the
bottom.)

When you get a complete kit from an established vendor, the new shocks should match the springs, and you have nothing to worry about.

If you’re not after off road performance, want a nice ride, and are desiring stock height, and keeping stock height leaf springs, why not just make it a no-brainer and go with OEM Toyota shocks?

Kleatus, that is what I am coming around to. If no one can tell me that the Bilstein 4600's will give me a 3x better ride than the Toyota OEM shocks - hell, if it was twice as good, I'd pay the difference - then for my 'soccer mom' driving, I'll pick up the Toyotas and be done. Anyone?

Wow. First time I've heard of OEM being the value option.

I drive my truck much like you describe, and I went with highest-end of the 3 models of shock they match to a 60/62. I think they were ~$40 each. The ride is ... OK, but I don't too expect much from a suspension only one generation removed from a stagecoach. I have about a 1.5" lift and one thing I noticed is that most of the value options don't have the piston travel to accommodate that. I'm right about at max extension at full droop. The higher-end offerings from Bilstein, OME, etc. will deal with this issue, but with the light use my rig gets, it's just not worth it for me.

Ok , Part number 48511-69066 and 48531-69105 on your order, There are none in the country of these part numbers, We will cancel and refund your order Thank you again if you have any questions, you can call 1-800-888-9753 and press 1 for Chris in parts. Thank you

So much for that path...

it shows you will need a QTY of 2 of each of these part numbers for the front shocks 90948-03011 , 90948-02114 , 90948-02017 , 90119-12088 and 48511-69096. This is what Toyota has redesigned and stated is needed to work. For the rear You will need a qty of 1 of each of these for the left side 90948-03011 , 90119-12088 and 48541-69026 And for the right side a qty 1 of each of part numbers 90948-03011 , 90119-12088 and 48531-69106.

another $80 to the $108 previous total...who said OEM would be cheapest solution?
