.....so the 43 ft lbs of torque on the hub nut are the only thing that holds the hub onto the axle?

Do I have that right?

Forgive me....It's early.. not sure why I am thinking of this....

43 sounds heavy..

But yes..
The two spindle nuts hold the hub on the axle.

I suppose you could consider the c clip on the lockout end of the birfield a retainer but...

YOUR GONNA DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(take the hub of and bend away.. no biggie, it is a extra sasfety thing)

in the pumpkin?

Pretty much, you want the fluid level to be right at the fill plug.

Phoneix,

You must bend the tabs of the 'star' washer.

One tab bent in (over flat of inner nuct)
One bent out ( over flat of outer nut)

Failure to 'lock' the nuts will allow them to loosen up; it doen't take much loosening for your steering to become unmanageable.

Don't ask how I know....but it did involve a change in britches....

Awww geez.

Well.. If it's gotta be done I gotta do it.

I'm glad I asked the question..

I would have let it slide but now I'm worried about it. .....I didn't do it right.

Thanks for the tip

The caliper also helps to hold it on, but I would not rely on it. Set the lock nuts right, bend the tabs and it will be good for 30k miles.

Should be good for more than 30K

Right-that's just the maintanence interval. It should be good to go for a long, long time.

TO heck with the maintainance intervals! Grab the top of your tire, front and back and try to rock it in and out. If you can feel even a small 'clunk' or even a little 'thunk' then get the tools out and reset the nuts, before you end up having to return your rotor, or worse.

Do this test once a month.
