Right, brake lights have two contacts

Mine Caught on Fire!

2000 LC. Left rear light panel caught fire. Smoke in the interior. Put it out with fire extinguisher. All I did was change a fuse after I replaced the brake light switch under the steering column to fix the trans shifter lockup.
Now the dealer tells me that the trailer wire converter needs to be replaced and the lens. $600.00 and more. That doesn't include the repainting of the burned area above the light.
Then I see on the net that 2000 Tundras had a recall for the trailer wire converter.
If anyone has any information , please advise. tim@kulplaw.com.
Thanks.

You should know better than to let the smoke out. Bad things happen.

What sized fuse?

This happened to me. I was driving on a pretty rough road and my positive battery cable broke off of the battery. The truck kept running so I didn't realize it until I turned it off to do some rock hounding. I was able to touch the cable to the battery terminal to get it started so I could get off of the mountain. After a while the left turn indicator came on whenever I pressed on the brakes. I could also smell something bad that I thought were my brakes. I did my best to sort through this thread and looked at the trailer light module...it was totally mushy and swollen and smelled like burning rubber and wires. I disconnected it as advised by this thread and the problem was gone! I wonder if running off of the alternator and only having the negative terminal of the battery connected may have shorted it out? Thank you all!
